I grow small Phal orchids in this at my office. I just water into the moss, trying to avoid the plant & its base. I only use it as that's what the Phals come in. After a time, I invariably get the base wet somehow & it rots. So that discourages me from trying it on Hoyas.

I have a lacunosa in moss its okay but not spectacular

I have a mounted pauciflora that is sitting in moss. The long vines have sort of sent roots into the moss, but I think a fine bark mixed in would be a much better mix than pure moss.

I might do a test rooting some Hoyas in a 50/50 sphagnum perlite mix in a glass (no holes) on a heat pad.

Thanks. I’m also going to test 50/50 coir and perlite and see which works better. I’ve seen several YouTube videos where people use just sphagnum moss in a glass with orchids.

I use the 50/50 coir and perlite mix. I have had good luck with this. I love experimenting too.

Carolyn - does your perlite eventually rise to the top after many waterings?

I use #2 perlite and I find after a while the coir starts to compact at the bottom while the perlite is mostly at the top. What am I doing wrong?

I haven't had that problem, but I have only been using this mixture since this summer. I got the info from Denise who is a longtime hoya grower. I mix mine in a covered ice cream bucket and shake it really well before planting.
