My valentine pomelo whent outside for 2 days and 2 nights and came in for 48 hours. It went out today for the next 2 weeks when we are to get more frost. My grafted Meiwa and seed grown Meiwa trees are also outside.

The Valentine Pomelo fro Tom is now outside in ground on the south side of my house where it will grow old and productive.

Steve, how do you like us897 as a rootstock? I have a sugarbelle grafted on it and it supposed to be dwarf. My trees are usually on c35

It is my favorite rootstock. I like it a lot but be careful with your tree. I have had problems with my US897 should keep your tree as a true dwarf but grow faster than it would on Flying dragon or standard PT. I am finding it very difficult to grow it in containers. It is very sensitive to soils on the dry side. I have lost 3 US897 trees with almost dry dirt. US897 will take wet soil much better than most other rootstocks All my US897 trees will go outside in ground where dryness should not be a problem. I believe they will be a top performer outside with great fruit taste that would exceed any other rootstock commercially available. The NZL fruits were good despite the tree dying to very close to the graft level. They were still mostly green but sweet will some tart.

3 of 4 lemons visible. The tree put out another growth spurt then started dying. I dd not get a picture when it was at its best. I think you will be very happy with your tree and its rootstock. rootstock suckering is almost nonexistent.

Good luck, Steve. For me the drawback to new rootstocks is that they have not been around long enough to determine long term compatibility. I am going to try Kaffir limes on Volkameriana next Spring.. that is if the volcano will leave me alone long enough to get my seedlings to budwood age.

It is doing very well. It has not bloomed yet. I just finished a quadruple glass Low-E enclosure for it. Ill get pictures tomorrow.

My latest picture of my Valentine pomelo

Dropping in the low 20's and it is covered in leaves, the tree is inside a cube made with quadruple glass on all surfaces. The leaves add a little more insulation.

This is the NZL on US897. The valentine is to the right.

For got the in ground seed grown Fukushu kumquat now entering its 3rd winter outside. It is over 4.5 feet tall with a limb spread just under 30 inches diameter.

As shown in the photos above the Valentine pomelo and fukushu kumquat are growing quite nicely.

My Valentine pomelo second fruit is ready to pick, maybe, the first one was all yellow but it was not even close to be ripe, don’t know about this one either. Been yellow for a month now.

Is your tree one of the few that is grafted to US897. As I recall Pip, Tom, And myself are the only ones with trees on US 897. I am under the impression that you got a hold of the US897 rootstock.

Steve,looking at pictures of valentine pomelo,s, I think , someone’s gave me a misslable one.

Bob That is why I hate buying grafted fruit trees. Wrong variety, wrong rootstock, Hidden health problems. I would have been fine If I ever learned how to graft or root cuttings. If it taste good then it is not a lost cause for you.

I am going to put everything on hold, no new stuff for sure. My trees are all grafted from sionwood of older fruit bearing trees. This coming season might be a clearing one.

Bob, a ST should not taste like an orange. Can you show us a photo? They are a true lemon - quite sour. Could someone have sent you the wrong budwood? I can send you some from my tree that I cut yesterday if you want.

Hey Bob...do you mean persimmon budwood? If so, then yes, that would be great. I am not sure which variety I would like best...I leave that to you. You saw my little tree, so whatever you think will work for it. It has not yet woken up, but will bud any day now.

Steve! It’s beautiful!!! ive been wanting a valnetine tree forever! Can you tell me if your leaves have winged petioles? I think I got a valentine pumelo tree but I might have gotten a eustis limequat instead. mine definitely do not have winged petioles. Have you had fruit from this tree Steve?

Jan The tree flowers and sets fruit and then the fruit drops. I watched closely enough to notice that ants chew the junction between the fruit and the stem thus felling the fruit then the tree flowers again. no fruit. I'll get a leaf picture after work.

Thank you Steve!!! I wonder why the ants pick on this particular tree? I have tons of ants in my yard too drives me crazy because they bring other pests almost made me get a chicken!
