You have been bitten by the clematis bug, haven't you?! ;>)

I have the 4 on your for sure list, though my Sapphire Indigo is still young. The rest have been in the garden for a while and are all lovely. My Roguchi took a while to decide it was happy in the spot it is in, but really took off this summer and bloomed its head off. Some places mention foliage mildew, but I haven't had that issue at all.

Betty C and Arabella were planted before I knew how much the voles like clematis, and so don't have mesh protection, but have thus far managed to grow faster than the voles eat. I really need to dig them up and replant with protection to see how much larger they will be able to grow. I also have Durandii in the same situation, planted at the same time. It has really nice flowers and has been healthy. In my garden it gets to about 5'-6'.

I am generally not as fond of type 2s, but one way they are a plus is if you have major issues with Japanese beetles, they bloom (at least here) before and after the J beetles are munching. This is most important for light-colored clematis blooms which seem to be a favorite. I won't plant any other light or white summer blooming clematis since they end up chewed.

Thanks Babs! I was hoping you would chime in. I tried to pick a couple type2s because I have a lot of 3s and I don't want all my clematis to be monsters. ( however I love large plants!) . I love the different shades of blue they all are . I'm excited to try them! :)

There are some smaller type 3; mostly the ones I have are non-twining types that I grow up the center of an obelisk

In my garden, 'Clair de lune' probably has one of the most attractive flower (colour and form) and is a very forgiving plant. 'Betty Corning' is very vigorous and has relatively long blooming time. I prefer 'Mrs. Harvey' over 'Roguichi' for better flower form and colour and is vigorous and long blooming like 'Betty Corning'.

Garcanad, I wish Mrs. Harvey were available in the US as that is one I have been noticing for years, but it only seems available in Canada.

So surprised that there is a plant available in Canada and not the US. Wish I can send you one.

After reading your post, I did a search and found this interesting note in Dave's Garden:

"Not only is this one of the most stunning Clematis, it is a garden mystery. It was found in the collection of a Canadian Clematis collector and named for her. It may be a reintroduction of a forgotten cultivar. It's very difficult to understand how something so unique and showy could go overlooked.............. A most unusual and beautiful Clematis, in bloom from June to September. MRS.HARVEY was discovered ....... next to the garden of the late Mrs. Anne Harvey of Kitchener Ontario, who was an early Clematis collector and whose collection was donated to The Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington Ontario. Of its parentage we only know that Clematis crispa was one. ...... "
If C. crispa is the seed parent, I imagine C. integrifolia (or maybe durandii) may be the pollen parent. But that is entirely conjecture.
This beauty reminds me of a showier version of C. 'Rooguchi'. Can you imagine. What is certain is that this cultivar exhibits some of the best traits of the Native American Clematis with a dash of something more exotic.
........ Hopefully it will soon be more widely available. ......"

Thanks for leading me to realize that I have a treasure. I should get a few more next spring for insurance.

I have gotten one Canadian-bred clematis, Joe Zary, from a nursery (Silvery Star) where I asked about it one year and she added it to her list another year. Perhaps I will try the same with Mrs. Harvey.

'Joe Zary' is a great early blooming Clematis, but it bloomed so early when I was too busy in the garden to appreciate it. I lost mine due to neglect and have to look for one now.
