We have an annual Spring Fling each April, generally in the Norman/OKC area, where people bring tons of plants, seeds, bulbs, etc. to share. It isn't really a swap, where you exchange Plant A that you brought for Plant B that someone else brought. Rather, we just pile up on the stuff on tables and people can help themselves to whatever they want, and we always have tons and tons left over anyway. So, the Spring Fling would be a great way to get starts of herbs like rosemary or lavender that are not necessarily easy to raise from seed (it can be done, if you are patient). I bet if you can make it to next year's Spring Fling, you'll be able to pick up all the herb plants you want....and more.

dawn I will try to make it to that. I just stood up for the first time by myself in six months and I have set a goal of attemding. I although I mostly lurk it would be nice to put faces with names.

Congratulations on standing up for the first time in six months. I know that I probably have no real understanding of how hard you've been working to achieve that, but I want you to know that I'm proud you met that goal. I hope you'll be able to attend Spring Fling 2018. . It always is good to have a goal to work towards. Once you attend a Spring Fling, you'll want to never miss another--it always feels just like a family reunion to me and I enjoy seeing everyone as much as I enjoy the plant part of it. I know you mostly lurk and only post occasionally, and I hope you'll post more often and lurk less. We love hearing from you! There's nothing wrong with lurking, but I just happen to think it is more fun to talk.

You didn't mention which sort of herbs you're interested in growing in containers--culinary ones? All types? I love container growing and grow lots of stuff in cattle feed tubs that a rancher friend gave me. They are big---about the size of a whiskey barrel and, because we have voles and tons of snakes (the snakes, I am sure, are searching for voles to eat), I raised my cattle feed tubs up off the ground by putting an upside down tub on the ground, placing another cattle feed tub (with drainage holes in it) on top of the first tub, filling the tub with soil-less mix and then adding plants. One thing I like about this is that it places the second tub slightly below waist level so it is easy to tend the plants. I haven't had any voles get into any of the tubs that are elevated this way, which is important since they eat plant roots and I've lost tons of plants to the voles in the past.

Another way I grow stuff in containers is that I use concrete mixing tubs (flat black tubs sold on the concrete aisle at places like Lowe's and Home Depot--they look like huge black plant flats) set up on a folding table. The tubs are only about (I'm guessing here as I've never measured the depth) 6-8" deep, which doesn't sound like much, but I grow lettuce and other greens in them and think basil and some other herbs would do just fine in the tubs too. I've also grown small micro tomato plants (Tiny Tim, Red Robin, etc.) in these tubs and like being able to harvest without bending and stooping (my back isn't as young as it used to be).

A friend of mine (he is 95 and has had serious mobility issues for the last 20 years at least with back surgery, hip replacements and knee replacements) grows his full-sized tomato plants in cattle feed tubs set up atop an old picnic table and on top of an old concrete wall. Someone else had to help him place those tubs up there at that elevated level and fill them with soil-less growing mix, but once that was done, he's used them for many years now and it enables him to keep growing tomatoes. The rest of his garden he's turned over to his son, who is my age, because he just can't do the physical work involved in row gardening nowadays.

When I first started using the cattle feed tubs almost 20 years ago, I was worried that the UV rays of the sun would make them brittle and they'd crack pretty easily, and occasionally that happens. However, it doesn't happen as much as I thought it would and I'm still using some of the oldest tubs after almost 2 decades. Where I live, a lot of ranchers just burn the feed tubs as trash to get rid of them....that's how I got mine. Our friend told my husband he was going to go burn a pile of them (about 20-25) because he was tired of the tubs cluttering up the place, and my husband suggested I might like them for gardening......might like them? Oh, I love them.

I still grow plenty of plants in the ground, but have grown heavily in containers since around 2003 or so. Anything that grows in the ground can be grown in containers and in drought years I find it easier to keep the container plants watered. If you put them on a drip irrigation system with a timer (even a flat soaker hose run from tub to tub works and costs less than drip lines), they're the easiest form of gardening I've ever done.

Dawn--where do you have all the containers gathered?! I can't begin to comprehend this. lol

I need to find some farmers & get some tubs, too. Ive posted requests on craigslist & freecycle, but no offers yet.
