Hello,

I'm from Encinitas, California (just north of San Diego), and we have some magnificent Ficus microcarpa nitida trees, some of which are 60 feet tall. Some of the neighbors are complaining that they're messy trees and want them cut down! (yipes). Few questions, hope somebody here knows:

1) how many times a year do they fruit?

2) what makes them fruit? somebody at a nursery said they fruit if there's a cold snap and then the weather warms back up. Is that right?

3) Why are some of our trees fruiting right now (late December, 2017) while other trees right smack next to the fruiting ones aren't fruiting at all? I was told that it was all about available moisture, sun exposure, and environmental factors, but that doesn't seem right because those factors, I'd think, would make the trees fruit more or less, not lots or none. Could these trees be dioecious (separate male and female trees)?
