Standards need to be overwintered in a frost free environment. Hardy Fuchsias are best described as root hardy, the branches and main stem will (likely) die if exposed to a cold frost. I have many Fuchsias that I leave in the ground over winter but they die back to the soil line after our first frost. In the spring I usually have to cut back the dead stems to 2-4" high (not suitable for a standard) but they still start flowering some time in June.

I'm in Vancouver, Canada so I imagine our climates are generally similar (mild summers/winters). At the moment though, we are experiencing an arctic cold front that might bring us a white Christmas!

Put it in the shed, garage, porch or cold greenhouse. As long as it doesn’t dry out it will just tick over but it will lose its leaves. Google over-wintering Fuchsias for more info. My tender Fuchsias are still outside but right up against the house and I’ll bring them in very soon. And I’m quite a way south of you.

I'd disagree with that statement :-) There are wide variations of hardiness with "hardy fuchsias" depending on species and breeding. But any magellanica should be fully stem hardy in a zone 8 - they can form quite large shrubs over time. I had a Fuchsia magellanica var. molinae in my old garden that was 8' tall and had major stems of a 2" diameter.

But this is a different issue (and species) than a tree form tender fuchsia and floral's advice was right on.
