If mature enough, some vine "trunks" can get very large. This is an established wisteria vine growing up this tree:

You can also see some ivy in there as well :-)

We would need to see some other detail like leaves, buds or twigs to determine an ID of your vine. Some clematis vines can develop that shaggy bark texture like the photo shows.

Wow that must be at least 200 years old. I'm surprised the host tree still manages to live through that.

But yea this is why I was worried about the vitis coignetiae on the chain link fence I was talking about the other day. If the trunk gets that thick it can destroy the fence

No, the wisteria wouldn't be nearly that old at all. This is a big- and fast-growing kind of plant.

Annual pruning and training would be used to keep Vitis coignetiae growing on a fence, that would otherwise be too small for this subject. Same as with many other kinds of climbers - the climbing habit is often used to get up into the light where trees are present, same as in your pictures. So many woody climbers - or lianas - are large-growing.

I planted a Parthenocissus henryana about 28 years ago. The trunk is now thicker than the one in your picture, Heruga. The bark on your vine looks like a Vitis to me but I don’t know what other candidates there might be in your area. If you want to grow a Vitis on a chain link fence it will need regular maintenance as Embo says.

I know that annual pruning will control the length of the vitis but wouldn't the trunk thickness still be the same? With that thickness, wouldn't that make the fence topple over eventually.

So I guess I haven't seen too many vines lol. To call that this one is big... but there are other vines like celastrus orbiculatis(bittersweet). Theres also poison ivy and virginia creeper but they have adventitious roots so its definitely not them.I don't think there are any clematises native here

The trunk thickness would not necessarily harm the fence. It would be rigid like a tree trunk, supporting itself, not hanging off the fence, and its height would be entirely in your hands. You could cut the whole thing to the ground any time you wanted to. What it could do eventually is encapsulate the wire.

I agree with grape vine, very common in the northeast. I cut them at ground level and paint weed killer on the stump immediately. It's an awful vine.

Yep, I've seen larger wild grapes...but they're impressive.

There's some feral orange trumpet vines in FL and LA that get huge trunks.
