update dining room

I have a very drab and traditional/classic dining room and I hate it!!! I'm more transitional and pragmatic with my decor. Without getting rid of the furniture what can I do to update this room?

Start by eliminating the chair rail. Replace the chandelier and contemplate a transitional wallpaper.

I would paint the walls the white in your rug, to make the rug be more of a star, because i like it so much! I am not a big fan of the chair rail, but it is very traditional. If it were me, I'd remove it, though others will certainly disagree. I am not sure I like the curtains, they compete with the rug, and I like the rug more. (A little hard to tell because of the lighting in the photos).

I like your beautiful floors and the nice white baseboard, crown and ceiling interest! The rug is really nice, too!

I think you can do better on your art/wall hangings. Maybe something large-scale, with some blue in it(?). I think you could go in a lot of directions there, without spending too much money.

If you don't care for the furniture, you could put a big table cloth on the table, and re-cover those chair seats pretty inexpensively.

Lastly, you could think about a chandelier that has more visual weight for the room. I think you could do these things pretty easily!

Your art, table runner and floral arrangement are quite traditional. You could look into new larger art, perhaps to pick up the rug colors, and you could reupholster your chair seats.

I would look for a chandelier you love. I agree with removing the chair rail and removing the runner, and using some art that you love.

You could recover the chair seats in a plain fabric. However, I would start with the other things mentioned.

roarah, I really like that last Picture! where did you find it?

A really cool and dramatic chandelier will make a huge difference. I love your rug but I wish it were larger. By all means find some large, colorful and visually exciting art. Lime green upholstery on the chairs would definitely take away from the traditional look. I would take off the runner and flowers, and find a large and interesting piece of porcelain in a more modern shape for your table. I have to agree that the chair rail does nothing for the room.

The dining room with the horse art is from the Sarah Richardson show that used to be on HGTV. She is a Canadian designer. That one was from 09/06/12 and called Sarah’s House Season 4 blue dining room

My3dogs is correct it is Sarah Richardson's design. She used blue grass cloth paper but a similar look could be achieved with paints.

Without reading the above comments, my first impressions:

Pattern of drapes and rug are fighting with each other. I love the rug (it seems a little short, but I think I see an angled wall that might not allow for a longer rug) so I'd replace the drapes. Maybe a subtle stripe?

The chair rail ends oddly in pic #2. I'd be tempted to just eliminate the chair rail. Then paint the walls a new color, maybe a toned-down version of the turquoise in the rug.

    Upgrade the chandy.

And maybe re-cover the chair seats in a fun fabric.

Finally, new artwork. Maybe one big painting instead of the two botanicals. Wonder if you also have space for a shallow console table on that wall?

Great suggestions and inspiration so far. My first thought is that the rug looks too small. If you can't or don't want to replace it with a larger one, I'd remove the chairs at the head of the table and only place them there when you need them for dining (assuming this isn't your every day eating space). Or if you have a leaf in the table and don't need that big of a table every day, I'd remove that and two of the side chairs instead of the end/head chairs, to make it all fit better.

I like the last photo by roarah . Good idea for two tone dining room ! You can use grass wallpaper or just painting.I would pick taupe color from rug for wall above the chair railing, tones lighter curtains with solid color, new chandelier.
