An olive tree might just provide the right amount of shade. Many orchids seem to survive cool nights provided there is a lift in day temps. Phalaenopsis are indoors all year here. Trying this and that is fun.

Ben, if this is the temporary shelter does that infer there is a permanent one in the works?

The olive trees have an open canopy and I can adjust light by moving plants up or down on tree . There may be an occasional bit of sunburn, but I take it in stride.... already started purchasing material for permanent shelter... lot more to go, will try to stay small-medium 10x10 or no more than 10x20.. will have to improvise a temperature control system with back up that is easy on the wallet.

On the plus side the low temps will help my olive trees and my fruit tree orchard in general to produce as many of my trees need cold temps. I have apples, plums, olives, chestnuts, peaches, loquats, asian pears, mulberry, figs, prickly pear cactus, pomegranate, blueberry bushes, some grapes, some citrus and am sure I'm forgetting some more...

The normal low temps for this winter are not conducive to growing orchids outside of a greenhouse and I cant keep plants in garage forever... will need to shuffle them in and out to get some light, maybe put rollers on their stand... I was spoiled rotten in South Florida.
