Rainy Blue

Rainy Blue isn’t available to US gardeners, however, its magnificent look makes us wish we had access to it. Here is a screenshot from an Instagram user named Modorose30. Helen

I love purple. I think if they ever do get a blue rose, there wont be any blue names left, they give them all to purples. lol

I think it would be hilarious if someone ever does make a blue rose, for them to name it Purple "something" lol A good one would be - Actually Purple haha

Of course as soon as I saw the photo,I hurried to look it up on HMF,but they say it's only sold in Japan. Uopefully that will change; it seems wierd that a rose bred by a German wouldn't be available at least in Germany...

Bart I got curious and did the same thing. I did notice that some people that uploaded photos were located in Germany. It is strange.

Of course it's a Tantau rose with Evers as the hybridizer. Guess who hybridized Augusta Luise? Evers, of course. I don't think anybody has offered roses recently (in the last 20 years) that are as unique as Tantau's roses. How I would love to grow Rainy Blue. Diane

What an interesting variety...I’d say the closest we get to this look is Love Song, though it’s not a climber. I agree the Tantau catalogue is the biggest missing piece of rose availability in North America...so many unique roses.

Thank you for sharing that beautiful photo, bayareagirl. I would love to walk through that garden. Here is a link to a blog that shows photos and a video of Rainy Blue: Vuonhongvanloan.com/rainy-blue.

This rose isn't for me, because the pale colors would fade to a whitish gray in my So Cal garden. It is very pretty in the right environment though.

Ok, more bits of info on the notorious kidney donation rose! My friend found this on a Chinese website. I immediately asked her if the name translated to Rainy Blue, and she said that’s the exact translation from Chinese! She said its a Kordes, that it was very popular and several people who have it says performance is excellent and they love it.

Edit: I see on HMF it’s listed as a Tantau. I still believe these are pics of the same ‘Rainy Blue’.

It's a gorgeous rose, no matter who hybridized it, but I still love my two Love Song roses, and they're just as blue--and one of them is as big as the above rose. Diane

I agree Diane, Love Song is pretty hard to beat, and among the bluest of the lavender roses. I have wondered if Rainy Blue would really even be as good as Love Song, or as well suited to US climates. And Bedard will happily part with one for $20 + change, no organ sacrifice needed!

@Diane Brakefield do you still love your Love Song Rose? I am thinking of adding it to my garden here in Portland.

Robert, I still love Love Song, which gets better every year. It does well in our dry heat, too. It's not the cold hardiest of roses, but I don't worry about that here. My first Love Song I've grown since the rose was first sold. The second one is almost as old. Both are grafted on Dr Huey, which is my favorite rootstock. No BS here, so I can't speak to that issue. No bug problems for LS--it's very healthy. Diane

It's glorious Diane, and I think I like that this lavender rose holds its lavender color without turning dishwater grey/beige. It's a fairy tale of a rose.

Thanks, Robert. I hope your rose does well for you. It should, judging from the other beautiful plants you grow. Diane

The Tantau involvement would be the basis for the first part of the modern, commercially oriented portmanteau cultivar name 'TAN04633'. 'TAN04633' Rose (helpmefind.com)

Love Song is a perfect rose. I also have it as a standard

Love Song is a perfect rose

Which you have planted together with PLUM PERFECT ('KORvodacom'). Thereby creating it would seem a perfect combination. If one (LOVE SONG ('WEKstameda')) is perfect and the other is PERFECT.

Well Love Song either hates me or it hates the South because one of us done killed it and neither one of us wants to admit it. 😅

Plum Perfect otoh, is perfect here!

Carol, you need to grow Love Song. Can you get it in Canada? Diane

Diane - yes, I persuaded a friend to buy one. :) :) But, not me...the lack of fragrance makes it a deal breaker. My friend adored her Love Song. :) :)
