Wondering if this rug will be a better option in my living room:

The pros can help you with color, etc. I imagine as an owner of a furniture store, you may get big discounts and that would be the first place I would look for more furniture.

Can you please take more photos of the space? I'd like to see the area on the other side of the rocker. My initial thought is that you might consider floating the sectional where the rocker is and along the window wall.

Why did you buy a sectional? For the space, it is not the best option. I would have recommended a sofa an a couple of chairs. However, if there is something you love particularly about a sectional, then there might be merit in keeping it.

Thank you everyone! We do receive big discounts on Ashley furniture and as the owner, my husband wants to be able to promote his store by furnishing our house with Ashley products. However, I am open to purchasing accessories, such as lamps, pillows, through other vendors. I also don't see an ottoman through Ashley that I like. Patricia, I like the idea of striped drapes! What color would you recommend? I did try to place the sectional on the other side of the room but it doesn't fit. Not sure why we picked a sectional...but as it was a gift from my man, I'm not going to return it and will just have to make it work. If you want to work with the sectional, then I'd

-pull the rug under the sectional further

-remove pillows except the dark ones

-add a floor lamp to the left of the sectional

-get a impactful piece of art from Ashley for above the sectional (hang it centered on the sectional).

Do you want to go with a neutral color scheme or just have your main pieces neutral and add color? Be careful when choosing neutrals. Example: the rug is more brown and the chair is more gray.

Because the fireplace is right there, I'd go with a lamp with a traditional column base.

Well, that's unfortunate that he bought a sectional. That space is too small for a sectional, and there is nothing worse than an L shaped sectional stuck into an L shaped corner. Given what you have, I would at least pull it out and center it on the window. Then remove those gallery wall hangings and put a skinny console on that wall with a large piece of art over it. And yes, you need a new area rug .... that rug is not good, it 's too dark, the pattern is too bold, and the colors don't match anything. I would get an accent chair, but I wouldn't do a solid color, I would get one with a muted, subtle pattern in it. Don't stores like Ashley's have designers that work there? If you want your house to be a showcase, then I would get someone with decorating sense over there to help you.

56 x 60 sounds like the dimensions of the outside. What are the opening dimensions where the coffee table will go?

The rug looks good....make sure you buy one that is the correct size.

As cpaul mentioned, a tweed or one with a subtle pattern.

I think I'm confused as to where to measure....I measured the "box" of space on the inside of the L of the sectional.

Unfortunately my husband doesn't have any designers at his store yet.

Separate the sectional so the the two parts face one another. Put the chair in front of the window. Chatting with people opposite you is more comfortable that trying to have a conversation with someone beside you. Entvtables of a smaller coffee table will help . Include lamps for flattering lighting.

I recommend a round table. It is just easier to navigate in a sectional....unless you use the coffee table for a particular purpose......like propping feet on.

I think the rug is fine and won't make much of a difference compared to your other choice and instead I would spend the money on new drapes in a solid cream or dark grey (linen would be lovely) and at the same time extend the rod if you can so that the drapery is resting more on the wall than the window. Would recommend changing the art and center over couch (you already have a collage in the dining room and a large piece would ground the space and provide a jumping off point for accessory colors) and add a floor lamp on left for balance. A 3rd color would be nice but nothing jarring so the room continues to feel soft - see below, so I'd be careful about adding a colorful ottoman and maybe stick with a rectangle shape. Your lamp choice may be too short/squat. The occasional chair would suit your room well and just add a mohair throw/fake fur pillow. I think the right accessories will pull the whole room and Marshalls (& HomeSense in Canada) have great choices at good prices. Bring home things and test them out together until you get the right combination.

I think the best advice, is instead of thinking about individual pieces at this point, consider how you would like the room to feel, look at lots of pictures for inspiration and combinations...have a plan before buying anything. Good luck and also have fun!

Thank you all very much! I Maureen, I like the idea of grey curtains and I love that floor lamp! Most of the art in my house is very personal to me as they were either gifts or I purchased from artist friends...but, you are all right, I need one large piece on that wall. CDR design, I like the idea of a round coffee table. We mostly use our coffee table for propping our feet on so that is why I was thinking of an ottoman but I am open to a coffee table that can take the abuse of feet on it.

Both rugs are too dark; sell them on Craig's List. Actually, the DR is too small for a rug, IMO. The current one is too close to the hearth, and although it is a good size for chair scoot and sit space, it is encroaching to much on the perimeters of the room. New drapes will help if you hang them properly. You have a lot of art but the groupings are not exactly right. They need to be tightened up and centered 5' above the floor. A single large piece 5" above the sectional itself should be nice. The blue I detect is a lot of your pieces might be a good accent color to sprinkle through both rooms. If that opening between the LR & DR were closed, you'd be able to hang more art.

If you want your house to look like a showroom and still use all of the items you currently have, it isn't going to work. You might be able to incorporate some of them.

I'm having a difficult time finding a coffee table that is small enough and affordable; trying to stay under $300. Are wicker coffee tables only for a coastal design?

To help it flow better, if you want to keep the rug then only keep the dark pillows on the sofa. You might also want to add darker elements to the room to help balance things out. Add in some iron elements too. The wood and lighter tons are what is throwing it off now.
