ST and store lemon comparison:

Some of you guys had asked about comparing these two lemons and today I had the opportunity. At our local seafood store, the lady gave me a lemon at the register (I bought crab cakes for our NY eve dinner :). It was not labeled, but I think it may have been a Lisbon. I did a taste test and there was quite a difference....much more than I expected. The store lemon was smaller, much thinner rind, and more sour. The flavor was more acidic, but in a flat way. The ST had a much fuller flavor and was still plenty acidic. I liked it much better. I had my older daughter and husband do a blind taste test and my daughter liked the ST much better. My husband liked the acidity of the other one but did like the ST also. Overall, I would say the ST has a much better flavor and those of you who do not have one, should go get one!! Hi Laura, I just wanted to say a sincere thanks for all of the sharing you do of your citrus trees and fruit. Firstly, it's great to see members have as much success as you do and it's awesome to see how much fun you and your family have with your citrus. Secondly, I know I personally have made many an adjustment to my 'wish list' for citrus based on your comparisons, taste tests, photos, and recipes / examples (not giving up on the ST Lemon, wanting to grow sudachi, and interest in the red lime to name a few).

How did you do the taste test? Straight off the flesh, juiced or did you add water? I tried to do a comparison with lemons here with my Meyer and Eureka, and I couldn't get past that they all were very sour and made my mouth pucker.

Thanks Pac! Denise, I just cut a tiny sliver of each and tasted them. They were sour, but not so bad I could not eat them. Highly suggest the ST!

I just harvested a good crop of Saint Teresa lemons (Named after Saint Teresa of Avila) from my in ground tree. My wife and I juiced the entire crop (took quite a while) and froze the juice in ice cube trays for future use. My largest lemons were about the size of a soft ball.

That’s great Silica! Enjoy the juice. I was pleasantly surprised by their flavor and size. Mine are not as big as yours, but my tree is young yet. It is growing countless lemons on most branches. How big/old is your tree and how many lemons did you harvest?

Laura, my tree is about 10-ft tall, and 7 feet wide at the widest part. I don't know how many lemons were picked, we did not count them. I don't remember the exact date we planted the tree, but the tree is perhaps 6 to 8 years old.

Laura, thank you for the pictures and updates! This post has me so impatient for an ST - I even emailed FWG to see if they had an estimate on availability: hopefully this spring.

Silica (and any other ST inground grower :), is ST (inground) a difficult/moody tree? Will it flourish in East Bay/Delta microclimate - extreme hot summers and cold winter nights but without extremes (30F was the coldest temperature I remember for 2 hours in my backyard)?
