On looks alone, I'd go with option #1.

I'd probably remove both and add some open shelving in the corner in a way that made it look balanced.

You could replace the overhead lazy susan corner cabinet with open shelving. I prefer cabinets with doors in a kitchen but if you're an open shelf fan, you could replace all the overhead cabinets between the hood and window with open shelving or cabinets with glass doors -- perhaps with shelves painted black or gray to coordinate with your new backsplash.

Be sure to match the wood finish on all the new pieces, whether or not they're the same as your existing cabinets.

Edit to add: Couldn't find the exact cabinet for which I was looking but I found these -- the overhead cabinets don't need to be solid all the way around the wall:

No open shelves near stoves all they do is collect grease and dust. I like option 2 with that hood wall simple. That single cabinet on that wall looks bad.

Agree with Patricia, the single cabinet in the corner looks lost. What other changes do you plan for your kitchen? New lighting? The Tiffany lampshade is a disconnect from the very modern vent hood, but I’m sure you know that. Good luck with your project and keep us posted.

I would never give up an upper lazy susan -- one of ours keeps all our spices (nearly) visible, and the other holds all the baking supplies and oils...

I like the second one. Gives the range wall a real focal value.

Wow, that was like one of those spot the difference games. I had to look for a long time to notice what you were talking about. I don't give up cabinet or closet space anywhere, so for me, I'd keep it. I didn't even notice that it was asymmetrical.

Debbi Washburn, after seeing your pictures, I changed my mind -- option 1, and you get to keep your storage.

I was going to say Option 2 until I scrolled down and saw the mock ups Debbi did-Now I say Option 1! Those really make a difference!

I actually put the pictures up there opposite of what the OP had done - just to see what folks would say....so the original option 2 is my option 1! Interesting experiment....

Option 1 is really good. Unless you want to remove the upper cabinets and put open shelving. I would tile up to the ceiling.

An open shelf or glass cabinet where your lazy susan was would balance and look stunning. When you add colored pieces in that unit juxtaposed to your grey backsplash, you will wow the viewers. I can see that you need under the cabinet task lighting to truly balance your design and make it an even more inviting space. Good job.

Option 2 looks great, it will really show off your backsplash. Option 1 is also great and would allow you more cabinetry space as well easier access to your cabinetry!

I like Debbie Washburn's turning the corner with the cabinet idea shown in one of her computer renderings, or the idea of taking out the cabinets in that corner and putting in open shelving. Good luck!
