Donna , this is a new bulb for me , not a re-bloommer , my other 'old' aulicums won't do anything this season I am afraid. Last year they blommed after a summer rest , last summer was rainy, they didn't rest and it seems they won't bloom...

Anja , This one I didn't grew from seeds , I got adult bulbs , what about you ?

this one is the 'Robustum' form , I grow the 'Corupa' too they are very very different. As far as I can compare your photo , they have exactly the same color , maybe mine has darker marks at the base of the petals , and is more frilled. The flowers is very big !! I'll try to take another photo today , not sure I can...

Here's a Corupa (from seeds) , Fred , it is so wonderfull growing them from seeds , the flower is the realization of years of culture and love and not just a purchase , be patient :-)))

JL , it's a dark orange, or an orangey red ! with very dark red veins, I'm not very strong for descriptions, but it's a beautiful color, rich color , I had to use the flash because the weahter is awfull ( it has been raining seals of water for weeks, no cold like you have !) but the color is true).

I was going to ask if it was var. robustum. It is gorgeous! I have some Corupa seeds, but I am waiting for warmer temps to start them. Have any advice on growing them from seed? Should I treat them any differently than other seedlings? I love Corupa's colors and robustum has such a beautiful, curvy, twisty, shape. Thank you for sharing, it's so, so pretty!

Béatrice, this is exactly what I thought comparing your robustum flower to my aulicum! Same color, more curves and maybe darker markings on yours :-) So maybe mine is robustum too. Your Corupa looks beautiful too, I guess I have to get seeds one day... Mine was a new bulb too and I'm happy that I just discovered new leaf growth on it.

thanks for showing. Can you make another picture in a frontal view of your robustrum? I know, it's a challenge with aulicum because the flowers are facing upwards and you miss a lot of it's charme when you try to capture it whole ...

I bought a bulb from someone on Ebay and if I remember correctly the seller told me it was Corupa also ... but it looks very differently. Here's my bulb flowering last year:

The colour is an intense velvet orangy-red ... or so I would describe it. I adore it mightily, the most precious bulb in my little collection. If I can I will try to get my hands on other variations of aulicum. My only concern is that I don't know what to pollinate it with, should mine decides to flower this year! ;)

Lokai , the aulicum 'Corupa' has very easily grown from seed, with no difference compared to other varieties. As they are epiphytes I repoted them in a more airy mix, with coconut chips and pine barks, but can they be grown easily in a conventional substrate?

Carl I think 'Robustum' nevers has this dark marks in the center of the flower. Some Corupa I grew from seeds had this marks but many other strains too .

Béatrice, you have an astonishing collection! I thought that "Corupa" was a habitat variety (described maybe by Mauro Peixoto) and just knew of the specimen with the extensive green eye such as your first shown one. They show enormous variation!

Béa, the face forward picture of your Robustum with the bud is absolutely gorgeous and I do so love the color!! The shape and the color are perfect!

I have 4 different pots of aulicum and I can't wait to see if they differ as much as yours. Two from Komoriya, one from seed and the other from Telos. I also recently bought from Telos what she described as a red aulicum but that is very small and I will have several years to wait.

Carl if your aulicum blooms again, I'd put papilio pollen on as this cross produces the loveliest flowers imaginable!!

Officially, there are only 2 Aulicum varieties var. glaucophyllum and var. platypetalum, and one form f. robustum.

"Corupa" is only an habitat variety used by Mauro Peixoto...

This species in the wild is highly variable.

Excuse me for responding so late, yes, "Corupa" is a denomination of habitat and besides these seeds come from Mauro, and there is great variability, the two parents used to produce these seeds were very different.

Donna, I have a lot of young X papilio aulicum seedlings coming from a beautiful color pupkim aulicum that you did a few years ago ... I remember the color of your unique flower! he might have been from Telos, could he? I hope to have a flower next year.

Yes, Béa. it was from Telos and it died (I did buy another) and also all my seedlings died, I can't believe it!! I can't wait to see some of yours bloom!! I want to make this cross again but now I can't get an aulicum to bloom.. now that I have some fresh papilio pollen!!

Hi Fred, What died were my seedlings of aulicum x papilio (my aulicum, Bea's pollen ) (and I subsequently lost that aulicum) from which I sent seeds of to Béa and hers are thriving while I lost all of mine!! This was several years ago.

I do now have several aulicum plants that I'm waiting to bloom but I thank you kindly for your more than generous offer!!! ♥♥ Donna

I read about this method in the Veronica M. Read book "Hippeastrum, the gardener's amaryllis".

Research at the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, has found planting and growing seeds in Seramis for the first 12 weeks be successful.

Hi Beatrice, thank you for sharing the pics of your robustum. For me, robustum is the most beautiful aulicum and your photos again confirm for me why I think it is so special. I also think aulicum hybrids are beautiful. Can't wait to see your aulicum x papilio.

Carl, I vote yes for aulicum x Emerald...it sounds very interesting. I have just recently gotten excited about Emerald. I never paid it much attention before, but now it is on my list.

I always oogle at your aulicum in their basket. They always seem to grow and flower so beautifully. One of these days when mine decide to flower, I may try growing them in a basket like yous.
