Whenever I get up to Gainesville I usually see hostas in lots of landscapes. We stayed at a B & B there a few years ago and the owner had a dozen or more varieties that were just gorgeous. My guess is they are tough to keep growing in a nursery environment because of our heat and humidity.

I think my backyard is so shaded that I could give it a go and see how they do.

I would try it if I were you. I bet you'll get some that'll do great and be so gorgeous. Good luck with your hostas Courtney. :)

There is a variety that has been bred for warmer climates, "Sun Hosta". It has a nice fragrant bloom and is a variegated seefling of "So Sweet". I have a couple and they have done fine for a couple of years in 9B or 10A zone.
