I contacted the home builder mentioned in the website article. It is limestone and they had it sourced from Wisconsin. Their mason sourced it so they don't know where it came from but confirmed it's Wisconsin Limestone in varying sawn heights and was a blend of a few limestones from the same region. Thank you everyone for your comments - they were pretty spot on!

Hi Paula, love your house and the exterior stone. And yes I would you use the same stone on the interior. Install the new stone on top of the existing stone as your fireplace should be built out a bit past the drywall, 3-6" would be good. A couple of items you'll need to know prior to installing a gas fireplace. Each fireplace manufacturer has their own specifications on how their unit needs to be installed. If it's on the floor, above the floor, distance to the mantel and several others items are required to meet code. You'll also need electrical and a new gas line, both require a permit and a qualified installer. Check this all out before you start your project. Best of luck. Jerome DeMarco ART.chitecture

This is the picture I replaced over the fireplace and the photo below is the rug before changing it out to brighten the room. I did not like the Italian Renaissance ornate frame as I want a more current, i.e. pottery barn, farmhouse look and this was not getting it for me. At the moment the unframed picture looks a little lost above the fireplace so I need to get a new frame. So, I am willing to purchase furniture to establish my look, even if it means replacing it all, lol. I want our house to be more current with the HGTV look as I like it, not because it is current, but because I actually like whatever it is called, the Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware or Farmhouse look!

oh heavens, don't paint that slate tile. just remove it and get something else that you like. it's easy enough to demo, and to redo. 100% remove the carpet. it's a fire hazard. this picture is just to show you how to do the hearth w/carpet. don't copy the colors or tiles! it comes out at least 12"-24" and spans the width. you can do large tile (Basalt is a good choice) or you can get a remnant solid piece of marble, slate, granite, whatever you like.
