Not very and is not a reliable bloomer in cold zones unless you winter protect it good. The blooms are not impressive but it can be a keeper if you like the leaves, which are very nice indeed.

Root hardy, yes. Bud hardy, not without winter protection.

Just an FYI, but Mariesii is different from Mariesii Variegata. Both produce very delicate lacecap type flowers, but Mariesii Variegata also produces variegated foliage that is quite striking. It does tend to be a relatively shy bloomer compared to its unvariegated cousin, even in my very hydrangea-friendly climate.

I was referring to the variegated version. I planted one and the pink blooms were few and not that great so I kept it for the foliage only (meaning I cut the blooms off).

I agree completely about the variegated version and there are so many other variegated plants and shrubs that are much more impressive - at least in our z8 climate. I pulled mine out after only three years of insipid growth and blooms.
