Beautiful Jody - I am not one for the true pinks but yours has convinced me that maybe next year I should get one! I am curious in the background of the giraffe what are all the hanging pots - do you do orchids?

Thanks all, not used to bulbs reblooming this early. I wonder if it has something to do with the crazy weather. I am hoping Iguazuanum is rhe real thing as this is the first bloom and we all know how that can go :).

On the positive side, as you can see, Giraffe gets more curves over time lol

Joy, Giraffe is a Papilio hybrid and like Exotic Star is a reliable rebloomer for me and usually has at least 3 flowers. Yes, the hanging baskets are mostly orchids that I take in when I think it is going to freeze.

Your Giraffe is very curvy! I like it very much. Your Neon is such a happy color and 5 blooms as well, very nice! I wonder if Giraffe x Exotic Star and the reverse would be as l9vely as either parent.

Hmm Lokai, an interesting thought. Exotic Star should tebloom late February and other Giraffe should bloom then as well so.....:) Also will save some pollen.

Mozaique

Today is warm/hot, who knows what tomorrow will bring. The weather has been crazy this year. In spite of the low temps last week, I am starting to see more and more spikes, go figure! Which also means I am going to have to start repotting now. This is the time when I ask myself why I have so many hippeastrum...and then they bloom and I remember why :) Jody

Mozaique's veining looks like the face of some parrot. I love the picture together with Giraffe. Beautiful colors and shapes. It was delicious to see.

So here is my "not Iguazuanum" :( I bought two bulbs from a vendor that I was disappointed with the outcome before and even though they made good on the $, it doesn't give you back the years spent growing the bulb to flowering. I have an additional clone from another source and so I can only hope (which springs eternal lol) that it will turn out to be the real thing. Hopefully my seeds from Mauro will bloom true.

Hi Jody, Gill from the Adenium forum here :-) Just hopped over as I don’t post a lot here having only a few hippies but just had to say what a great looking flower on your first plant! Seeing as 99% of us Adenium growers dont particularly admire their default pink flowers and crave for other colours, I’m stunned by this pink flowered Hippie you have here.....it looks great!

Hi Gill! Nice to see you here! That is funny that adeniums lovers don't like pink to show up in their seedlings because it is so dominant, while red is so dominant in hippies. At least we can get almost black adeniums, we're still working on that here. Do hippis grow well in your climate? Not sure about bulbs but can send seeds or pollen if you want. Jody

I love your Neon! I have always liked the pink flowers and have never had one. I mostly have the species and there are only a couple pink ones out there. I didn’t buy new bulbs this year since I have no space, but I think your picture has convinced me to make an exception! Also, I had the exact same thing happen to me with an iguazuanum. It came out looking just like yours a year after I bought it. I wonder if ours are sisters!

Hello Jody. In answer to your question above, hippies are generally grown as either houseplants or greenhouse plants here in the U.K. It may be possible for someone with a very sheltered garden in the southern U.K. counties to grow them outdoors, maybe. Whether they could withstand being planted in the ground year round I dont know, potted plants may work down there I f bought in for winter. I definitely wouldn’t plant them outdoors in my area. This years lowest temp here so far is -6C, in 2010-11 it was -17C to give you an idea. We do get a fair amount of rain too!

Hippies are usually only available as seasonal items here and tend to appear in the shops as boxed gifts at Christmas....and I would guess that once flowered, most get thrown away too. You get a bulb, a hole-less pot, a bag of inappropriate coir type fibre potting mix and little instruction on what to do with the bulb that has probably already grown a 1:5 ft flower stalk inside the much smaller box! Occasionally you find them for sale as potted bulbs with flower buds beginning to push forth, but in the bigger garden centres. They’re becoming increasingly popular as cut flowers with our nearness to the mass plant/cut flower production nurseries in the Netherlands, something that was never seen years ago.

I only have five bulbs, two of Apple Blossom, two of Red Lion and one which I’ve not labelled and can’t recall its name, but it’s dark orange and hasn't flowered for some time as I lost the mother bulb, so this is an offspring! The AB tends to flower for me in June and RL in July. I hadn’t realised that Red was the dominant hippie colour.....I do like it though!

Geoff kindly sent me some dark red seeds some of which I’ve managed to start and have seedlings growing away. I’m eagerly awaiting the day when one flowers. I’ll try sending you a PM.
