Help in reconfiguring small kitchen

I need help in reconfiguring this kitchen/ dining area before I replace flooring. I’m on a tight budget but could possibly add/ extend/ remove that wall. It needs character and more functionality. That’s a door to the garage in the middle. Also, can honey oak cabinets ever look updated? They’re in perfect condition, can’t afford to replace. Thanks for any input!

What problems are you looking to solve? In my opinion, the current layout seems pretty functional given the footprint. I can think of a few different reconfigurations, but if you're on a tight budget, they probably wouldn't make sense. Knowing why you want to change the kitchen in the first place would help.

As for the cabinets, the main alternative to replacing is repainting, but contrary to popular belief, that usually is not a DIY job and costs thousands. A more affordable alternative might be to update the cabinet hardware; you'd be surprised how dramatically that simple upgrade can change the overall feel of the kitchen.

The one thing I would say absolutely needs changing is the lighting. That ceiling fan/light is throwing shadows everywhere. To be honest, I'm not sure how useful a ceiling fan almost directly above a gas stove is....perhaps swap it out for an updated light fixture and add some undercabinet lights?

Is the wall load-bearing? If not, remove it if you want to. Then go with frenchtarragon's advice, they're right on the money

Thanks for your help! I just don't like the current layout and was hoping to add some character without gutting the whole thing. Someone suggested I close the hallway opening but I think that might make it worse. I would love to add a bar type area to sit/ more counter space but maybe it's not feasible. I did plan on changing hardware and lighting.

Closing the hall doorway will just make it feel cramped and claustrophobic. Save up your money and think seriously about doing a full remodel.

You can't change the layout without gutting it and the current layout is probably the most functional layout for the space. I would remove the hallway wall and add a little mobile island to that corner instead if there is room. What are the dimensions of the kitchen?

I’m not sure exactly, but it’s very small (prob 10x10). I can’t move the garage door, as it is on the corner of the garage already. Out of curiosity, what would you do in a complete gut/ rehab?

Buy a store bought island and place it so it touches the outside of the small wall and faces the kitchen. It will be sitting on the carpet and be somewhat in the way of the basement door, but I don't imagine that will be a constant issue.

That gives you another countertop and a spot for friends to hang out.

You can play with the location and use it to help imagine what you will do when you have the time, money and inspiration to do a great update.
