When its got seed heads, it comes up to about my chin, I'm 5'8". Before that I'd guess around 3 to 4ft. I've got three mature clumps grouped together in a fairly dry spot and only half day sun. I made some divisions that I planted last year and expect they might get taller, more sun and better soil.

One thing I noticed today while working outside is Dallas Blue is reddish in winter while both the Northwind and Heavy Metal are light wheat colored. I was thinking that would make for some interesting winter interest if planted together in groupings, I may have to think about that....

I’m a big fan of Heavy Metal. I’ve had clumps for about 10 years. They've never flopped for me, are rigidly upright even through winter. I think the winter look is handsome. Best of all, they don’t outgrow their space too quickly.

I tried Northwind last summer and they were too young to put on much of a show. They look slightly different to me in winter with Northwind just a bit brighter a straw color and perhaps the leaf blades are just a trifle thicker. But it’s really too soon to judge their differences.

I have one Dallas Blues grass and love the color. It sorta flops though, but I forgive it because she's a beauty! LOL.

Where do you guys buy your grasses? I might do a row of HM, but I don't want to pay too much. I already have a row of Northwind, which is such a beautiful grass.

I’ve bought my grasses mostly at local nurseries, that is, until I was introduced to Santa Rosa Gardens last year. They don’t stock everything, but they do have quite a good selection of grasses. The plants from them have been excellent quality and their customer service is the best. They often have discounts, especially generous later in the year.
