For me the optimum size I put all my trees in are 1/2 wine barrels which become their permanent home. I have 7 avocado, 2 dwarf peach and nectarine and 7 citrus in them. I'm using my 20 gal containers for peppers and tomatoes :)

Absolutely this it what I have been doing for several years in my garden with my tree's, peppers and tomatoes.

I wouldn't plant a 3 gal tree in a 20 gal pot. I gradually upgrade.

Denise, please i am talking about final resting place for a citrus tree in this case. Small tree's you just bought or grafted need to be grown in a rootmaker pot for at least 2 years. It will have a large rootball,than transfer to a 15 gl or 20(squat in my case) container. Since i bought my containers from A.M Leonard by the case(10).

Not sure if the Central Valley of California is a quarantined area; but you can get Tahoe Gold budwood from CCPP, or at least that is what I think.

Can you make a concoctions that make your mix so light that you can savely grow a good size tree in a 20gl container and able to move it easily. I am working on it. You have to use more perlite, maybe some styrofoam on the bottom, the stuff they use at UPS or Fed.

Wheals. I made a container out of wood 2 feet by 2 feet 1 foot deep. I used an aluminum window Screen for the bottom. The soil was 50% garden dirt and 50% compost (not peat). Its the wheels not the perlite that makes a plant light to move. The heavy dirt formula keeps plant upright and moist in the heat of summer and the screen provides all the aeration needed in the winter with out root rot.
