do dark counters and do light maybe beige? counter tops it'll look cool :D

I would fear that dark counters would really make this space feel darker -- that's a lot of surface area. maybe spread black trash bags over your counters to get a feel for the change. otherwise, you should be able to find something that stays on the lighter end but goes with the colors in your floor tile, either solid or patterned. pick the backsplash last.

I would want light granite similar to your floor tones, neutral and not too busy and plain gray or beige tile splash. I like Astonia's choice for color, but I may be a little busy with the floor. The key is for the stone and splash to work with the floor.

I agree that the counters and backsplash should be on the lighter side. You will have slate appliances which will make the space even darker. Choose a light tone from your floor and choose a countertop with much less movement than the floor. If there is any movement in the countertop, then your backsplash tile and grout should have very little contrast.
