How to make old dining set fit into transitional setting?

We just got this set yesterday from my parents. It's well-worn but that is why I love it. They purchased it 35 years ago from an antique store. The only mark, besides some numbers on the bottom of the table, is a stamped "H" .

The 2 Captain chairs are still at their house and are the same as the 4 in the picture but they have arms. The rush seat are original and I love them. Unfortunately, my cats think they have died and gone to cat-scratch heaven so I think I need to cover the seats somehow. I want some type of cover/pad that it not too traditional but does not feel completely out of touch with the style of the set (French Country?)

I am not sure if I should keep the 2 shield back chairs in that room. I will wait to see what it looks like when I get the captain chairs for the heads of the table. I also think that the light needs to be changed.

Any thoughts on chair covers or other way to make this room work with this set?

Looking at just that room, seeing your art, paint color, area rug & other flooring, I personally think it works. I can't really see the light fixture. I don't have suggestions for the chairs...maybe others will. Nice dining room.

That may be the very coolest dining room set I ever saw in my whole life! And the cane seats are just perfect, so I think that I might get some tie-on cushions and tie them really tightly. At the same time, find the cats something that's even more enticing LOL. Maybe a garage sale chair? I too think the room works, but if you want to add a little bit of depth, you might paint the wall below the chair rail a little bit darker color.

Your beautiful room lacks color. I would cover the chairs in a solid terracotta, blue or green material and then add that color to some room accents. Some more colorful wall art would also be nice. I love your rug.

I agree that is lacks color. I would love to get a large piece of art but I don't want anything too traditional looking but I am not sure what would work in that room.

I love an eclectic/collected look but I am always unsure of my ability to pull it together without it looking like a hodge-podgy of stuff. I know what I like when I see it but I can't picture it in my head before-hand.

I need to find some pictures of what I like and try to work from there.

You can get all kinds of seat cushions in all kinds of materials or have some custom made. That was quite common for those kinds of chairs back in the day when they were made. My grandma had cushions on all her cane and rush seated chairs. I have a rush-seat chair set in my kitchen dining area, and I have to say that cushions are not a bad idea for those chairs anyway, in the comfort department! And if you ever feel like mixing it up, you can always get chair covers for the chairs. They are pricey, makes me want to learn to sew just to make them. They always have awesome home sewn chair covers on display in the sewing store in my town, to lure you in! You can also mix it up on that table with tablecloths or runners and/or placemats! If I ever do learn to sew, my first project will be placemats!
