Nothing...do nothing until the kitchen has been renovated. A kitchen has 7 elements:

1. Cabinets

2. Counter tops

3. Flooring

4. Back splash

5. Lighting

6. Paint

7. Appliances

Notice how flooring is ranked #3? That's because it is SUPER important. If you are going to add more wood to the kitchen, I would suggest waiting to redo the wood floors until you have finished the kitchen renovation.

I know that's not what you want to hear, but it is what makes sense (design wise and financially). If you change the hardwood colour today, you are going to find that you will have a heck of a time putting in new wood floors tomorrow.

Why? Because the stain colours will not match. They can be "close" but they won't match. And you will be forced to lace in new hardwood into what is already existing. That means those areas will need a sand and refinish when you add the new hardwood = more sanding and refinishing despite the fact that you just had it done (and paid $$$$$ to do it).

And the foot print of the current kitchen will change when you do the kitchen renovation...and then you will be forced to deal with voids, patches and lace-ins anyways. Again, the floor COLOUR is best dealt with AFTER the kitchen renovation...not before.

Other than that, the only thing to be "done" to this floor = cover it up with area rugs and kitchen mats. Or rip it out and stand on subfloor until you are ready to tackle the kitchen renovation.
