Here's some inspiration. You have room to install a double door. Beef up all trim, removing the shutters up top, as well as the eagle and written house number. Don't remove the "wings" as they allow stand up room in the upstairs. Look for Dutch Colonial homes and steal some of the ideas you find there. Note the big lights here and the fun door color. It is a lot like your red color, so maybe painting the house periwinkle or silvery gray would let some bright doors pop. I would match the lower front siding to the siding upstairs - wider is better (see house pic above.) Also tackle the overgrown landscaping by getting your fiance to pull out those overgrown hedges. Hire a local nursery to work up a plan that the two of you can install yourselves over time.

Here's another color idea. Notice how the roof has been extended forward. That would take away some of the flatness of the facade. Could give a bit of overhang at the entry too.

The "wing" dormers are not unusual on a Dutch Colonial home. Wait 'til you see inside.
