design cohesive?

last modified: 7 years ago

My living room is off ? Getting new window treatments and a dark hardwood floor but the bones of the room ( the furniture ) doesn't seem right. I cant figure out what is wrong. Looking for advice and recommendations... the room is 12'.11" by 16'.4". sofa cherry mahogany is taupe velvet 80 long 34 deep arm height 28-30" gradual increasing sloped arms and 20H. Lamps are 34.5 " H, 17 diameter is the shade, chairs are cherry mahogany 27 wide and 30 deep taupe velvet, console is black and cherry mahogany is 52 long, 13 wide and 37.5 high. coffee table is 44w, 21d 18h antique gold , side tables 24w 28d 25h antique copper. mirror is champagne 41 in diameter. stools 19.5 h 20.5 wide 18 L black with gold finish, windows are 35 wide . ceiling is 8 ft.

Is there two many double shelf or stretchers or too many different leg styles that make it look not cohesive? Are the end table right against the wall or should it be different..? I would like to keep the sofa and chairs maybe change fabric on chairs and I wanted to bring white into the room. White, taupe , cream with dark furniture. ? gold and champagne accents.? trying for a transitional look, but very put together and restful and clean.

please let me know your recommendations? Kravet, cameo velvet, commercial line, stools are a herringbone sort of peachy.. not sure I like either.

Claire, the bit of curtain you see in her first photo is from the end wall.

Yes I see that...what I'm questioning is that her plan has three windows is that on the other side of the wall that is not shown. Bette P the layout you suggested she has it that way in the plan and the other thing that I don't get is she says her couch is 80" and her side table is 28" in depth I simulated it on a 3D app. Her sofa and side tables are not centered. Both side table should reach (the ends of them) should reach the trim corner of the window.

Opposite the archway, she has her sofa on the longest wall with one window on the far right. The wall opposite the console & stools has two windows. The console wall has no windows. Her seating arrangement appears to be centred to the archway, but the archway is not centred to the long opposite sofa wall, that's part of her challenge. Hence, my suggestion to try the sofa on an end wall, they have symmetry.

(On her sketch, the circle with the X in the middle are her lamps beside the sofa, she doesn't have the end tables drawn below them). That's how I am seeing it.

Oh Claire, I just switched to my ipad and the photos are stretched, is that confusing you too? The sketch is waaay distorted, the wall lengths look totally different. Perfectly clear on my desktop Mac.

yes but have you noticed on the plan there is only one window facing the arch wall and the two window wall is adjacent this picture here on her keyboard

Yes, the one window wall is the longest wall.

OP can you please post a pic of the wall with the one window : )

You are getting helpfulness. But I want to say that you need the gold table - it brightens more than white!!

Problem to me is the darkest among the sofa area: end tables. Not next to the pink. Ok on other side, but could change iyw [if you want]. :)

Esp. if dark floors? add some light color so the sofa isn't the only:

OP, Have you thought about using block side tables but not this stone color maybe gold or a dark brown.

I appreciate that, Claire [as many posts to read]. But what about the soft pink?

I don’t think the block table works with OP’s style.

Everdebz, her sofa is taupe, I think the photo/camera is picking up a pink tinge.

Just if art picked up the subtle tones - maybe a bit of the matchy, or the dark this or that wouldn't matter - as much.

Yes, Claire you are right there are 3 windows in the room.. the sofa is on the longest wall with the window , sofa is centered in the archway.

I post it in the same way -that a woman could fall for George Clooney - but then seek out a similar experience, a similar 'falling for' with a regular guy. If you like that art, there are others like it!! Is my analogy ok? :)

The sofa and three chairs are a kravet velvet called cameo it is taupe there may be a subtle pink undertone.. it looks more like a light oatmeal color. Also I don't have pink accents in the house mostly white , taupe , expresso/black with champagne and gold accents.. hope this helps clarify the color

Not at all desired for the room? so nice a look... fresh, and not stale.

thank you Bette P . you are so right about the room.. although I'm not sure where to put the couch.. the couch is against the longest wall and center on the archway.. the lamps flank the couch with an end table.

    Ok, I'll stop... :)

Need something sort of handmade or irregular.

I am not trying to make the room too girly rather more tailored.. opposite of the furniture... if that make sense..

I like the throw .. ever!

Good... that type of art doesn't seem girly to me. I'm not expert, but my opinion. Especially if you're installing dark floors!

    last modified: 7 years ago

Tailored, how, and idk. For starters, your symmetry is tailored, so to speak. On Project Runway, they tear them up if stripes don't match at the hems. Yours do... [?!]

Susan, I like the picture you posted even the coffee table, but the position of the coffee table in my room would not show the decorative part of the table you posted... but yes I am trying to mix it up a bit... I know I need some solid bases but which type, and where do I place. Another solid chair would be good but where to place it.. I love all your suggestion but now I really confused. All, I see your points on the floor and artwork.. looking for more suggestion. can someone insert picks in my room. I get a better picture of the sofa wall. You guys have great ideas the hard part is execution... uh....

Oh ever.. that's good at least my room is tailored.. thank you

the first picture the end table are shown at the 28" side facing the archway. It does hit to the window trim.. I recheck the couch measurements... ok. ty...

ok, ever.. I guess you are right about the art, I guess I would prefer something more generic.. but your points are well made... Also, I am quite afraid of such bright colors it would throw me off... I am not that daring.. I guess its not me.. but again .. maybe the art work should have something more.. idk.

yeah that's because I thought the other window was on the same wall which, i figured the other side table should hit the window trim as well but you already said to me that its only one window on the sofa wall. Ok the 28" side facing archway can you turn it around to see how looks.

any hardwood recommendations..?? colorwise....the front of my house is grey stone I thought a dark floor would go with the style of home.. but if that doesn't matter I am listening...

ok, turned around tables are shown in the last picture with the narrow side facing the archway.. you will notice the stretcher is turned from the first picture.

It's a lovely room. What bugs me is the same that bugs everdebz...the end tables (too dark and large)

I also think your layout is perfect...if you turn the sofa, the arm of the sofa will visually cut off that one window and I don't think that's a good idea.

    What about something like this:

from the outside roll arm of the sofa end to end is 80" the back of sofa is 76"

    pennydesign, has the right idea

yes, I like the penny design, thank you but i really want something classic like the 2nd table but the quality of the second table (at least the one I saw) was really bad.. any other classic tables with a bottom..if you will. thank you.. very much.

I’m suggesting this table for its a bit narrow and wide

I know everyone is going to disagree with me, but is it necessary to discard a rug that looks brand new? You can have an area rug over a wall to wall carpet and not have it look strange - my living room does. Why send something to the landfill that looks so nice and not the least bit worn. How about a white fluffy long-haired rug that will partially hide the problem of too many legs since the poster wants more white in the room? It will also give needed texture.

Is there a way to put the photo of any of these tables in the living room picture.. If you can share with me how to .... it would help to see... before I buy again.. tk u

Does a round or oval end table with a solid center leg make sense, or if I do a white wood end tables would that look terrible...? if i do dark wood it maybe all to much wood or go for a muted gold end table and coffee table... one or the other has to be a solid base I'm guessing. please advise...

the finishes throughout the house are champagne or aged gold.. any suggestions...

i decide the end tables and coffee table need to go... unless i refinish the coffee table in a champagne color..?

    last modified: 7 years ago

    What about something unique?

dyyh, you don't need a solid base. A wood table would look very nice.

I think it depends on what you want your end picture to look like.

  • PRO

You need to do this ONE STEP AT A TIME, not all at once. One change can make everything already there look very different.

I would not do dark hardwood - choose a medium brown tone - it will not show every single speck of dust/pet hair and is timeless. Do this first. See how it looks. Then think about your curtains. I would not do ready-mades - they will be skimpy and cheapen your room. Choose a wonderful Dupioni silk. They come in a HUGE range of color and will also add just a bit of texture, which neutral rugs desperately need. Have them lined and INTERLINED. This will not be as expensive as you think. If you have a Calico Corners nearby, look there.

I like the lamps on the end tables. Not crazy about the end tables, though. But they may look MUCH better with the new flooring. You could have marble cut to fit the tops and that could look quite nice and a bit more interesting than what you have.

Yes, the chairs are not inviting. At some point, look for a skirted chair that is truly comfortable - a small scale club chair or such - even character chairs.

As I said before, one step at a time and slowly. You will love the results.

    dyyh,

have you made any progress with your living room also hope you don't mind I did a render of your room and turned everything around also gave a bigger console the scale of yours seems too small
