African Violets

Upward pointing leaves?

I have several violets from our local botanical garden and our nursery. When I buy a new one its leaves are horizontal, large, and with long leaf stems. After a few weeks or months the new leaves are smaller, have short stems, and point up from a very tight crown. The violets keep blooming. I keep them under LED plant lights. What causes the tight crown and how can I avoid it?

The pictured violet is producing new plants (which we call suckers).

I can see a sucker looking at me from the front the pictured plant (in front of the blossoms).

As these new plants are produced, the pot becomes crowded and begins to look like your pictured plant.

If this is allowed to continue without any intervention, the pot will become so crowded that the plant(s) will no longer bloom.

The solution is to separate these new plants from the main plant, so that it can spread its wings again.
