I need to take more pictures. Here's Mini Skirt on the way up and looked good all season, but no more pics.

Mango Tango - great spring for this one but tough fall and I just hope it comes back.Might Mouse - love all the mouse hostas.Midas Mouse - separated the yellow shoots from a variegated hosta. I had high hopes they would survive but I don't think they will be back in the spring :(Montana Aureomarginata - an exchange with a friend. He gave me a good sized clump but I expect my leaves in the spring will be smaller. I tied up the leaves with a black fabric scrap and then supported the whole plant with a peony cage. It was transplanted in the summer but did fairly well.

Five clumps of Minuteman in my front garden in July.The flowers were really outstanding on Minuteman this year.Minuteman in August had some very creamy leaves - hope these shoots come back next year.

Munchkin Fire (new) I thought this hosta was so cute! I rushed to take a photo of it before it went dormant. I plunked it down beside my elephant ear pot and my new sun mouse. In fact I loved it so much I bought two!

Majesty (This one has been struggling. Maybe it just doesn't like to live in a pot.) I couldn't believe these tulips bloomed last year. For the most part, they will usually come up with buds and the squirrels bite them off before they bloom! I really enjoyed them last spring.

Never thought that a "super-infected" look would actually look pretty cool! Love your Mito-no-hana, Gary!! Now to see if anyone has it for sale...and I'm not even into green hostas...

Ahm, guess I'll have to pass...on its $120-150 price tag :-S Even though that's already down from over $200, it'll have to go down quite a bit more for me :(

I’m having so much trouble growing montana Aureomarginata that I’m afraid to put its sport Mountain Snow on the list. If anyone has both in their garden could you give a growth rate comparison?

They are both pretty vigorous growers with sufficient sun. Look above.

Such a great variety of hosta here, I think M has been my favorite letter so far!

zkathy, I also have some trouble growing some of the montana- based hosta. I'm keeping my Mountain Snow in a pot, so I can maintain moisture better than the ones I have in the ground. My soil doesn't retain good moisture in the heat of summer, and I've noticed my montana Aureo. in shade, is doing better than the one getting more sun. By the way, nice patch of peacock spikemoss!

Moon Waves needs to be moved. I've had it for ages and it's hardly grown.

The same as other Blue Mouse ears ruffled plants. I found it at a local nursery and named it before seeing the others.

I am always amazed that the beautiful May turns turquoise in the fall.

May turns blue? I didn't know that... It is on my "wanted" list... even more so now.

McT, I would have to assume, that isn't May if it turns blue. A new mutant in the McTavish garden?

Would love to see more pics of Hosta May... Beverly posted a couple of beautiful pics of her May near her June, but the leaf shape looks rounder and the mound taller than I thought May would be. McT's leaf shape looks more like what I'd think May would be, but if May doesn't normally turn blue later in the season then I sure would love to know the correct ID of that beauty too.

Hallson Gardens website says it takes on a “bluish/greenish yellow tint in the summer.”

McT, great plants and informative post. Many plants that were on my list, but I ended up with something similar instead (Sea Gulf Stream instead of Maya Swing Time - please don't tell me how different they are and how I need both, unless you support your claims with pictures, lol). Love the name Mrs. Mouse Ears. Always love seeing May. Its been on my list but couldn't find it, so I got some similar but not quite they same and then when I did find it, it didn't make the cut. If I ever see a nice one for sale in person it will be in my cart.

zkathy and StevePA, just wondering if either of you has tried H. Atlantis (which looks similar to Montana to me but is a fast grower)?

You guys got me interested in looking back on colors of hosta May. I bought it in 2006 from Hosta Choice nursery. They never made a mistake in their plants that I am aware of. I think it must have something to do with the light and sun levels.

The first couple years it was in half day sun. Looking back at pictures it stayed creamy yellow.

2009 fall in it's permanent location

in 2012 it looks like it turned blue by June

in 2015 it was blue again in sept.

The only thing I can think of is that is dependent on light. The unearthly turquoise color has always appealed to me with this plant.

It has great color through the whole season. Here it is in 2016 (I didn't take may pictures this year).

PamperedP, I have a pic of my Atlantis in the A's. In my experience, it is a good grower, given, consistent moisture. Mine had lost size last year due to dry conditions in consecutive fall-spring seasons. I personally like it a bit better than montana aureo. In my garden it is a more dense plant, just has more oomph.

That is very interesting McT, considering blue coloration usually has to do with the wax coating in spring. I'm thinking maybe a big difference in our length of growing season, and typical temperatures, yours might develop, and keep its wax, much later.

McT, what is the turquoise hosta in your first pic (Sept. 28 '08) to the right of May that's of similar size and shape?

I don't know Steve. Our season is probably shorter and the summer temperatures are very hot and dry. Mid eighties to mid nineties are usual for most of the summer. The location in the earlier pictures received hours of direct noon day sun which I guess could be why it never built up the wax?

Pampered Peeps, that hosta is Carolina Blue. It did really well there until it over grew it's spot and was moved. Here is a picture in August the summer before I moved it into the woods where it floundered. It is now back in some sun.

McT, seems we don't have enough 'May' growers posting to hash out this conundrum. Your temps are higher than I figured they might be - pretty much like mine. I did read on Hallson's site that May takes on a yellow-green-blue coloration during summer. It just boggles my brain, how blue yours gets, when mine, admittedly with a good amount of mid-day sun, turns parchment white by later in the season.
