If no photos available, can you tell us the species? Some viburnums will grow into tree-like proportions and routinely pruning them into a small cube will not be good for their health or their bloom cycle.

If they are too large for the space they are in, consider moving them rather than pruning them into cubes......plants don't grow as squares and generally do not look very good pruned into that form (expressing that as politely as I can :-)).

They were here when I bought the house 17 years ago, I just assumed that they were virburnum. I have been trimming them every year.

they ... whatever they are .... are obviously to aggressive for the spot they are in .... and they are not some exotic shrub .... i would favor one more day of labor.. and be done with them ....

it is a common error that peeps buy some nice little plant ... to fill a space, with no real concept of hoe big they can get ... and then they move.. and leaves the new owners with all their mistakes ... lifes to short ...

BTW ... even if you did hack them down to 6 to 12 inches or so ... with the mature root mass .. and with your long growing season .... they will be right back to size in a year or three ...

be done with them.. guilt free ....
