Pruning stimulates new growth which would be zapped if temperatures fall below 27 degrees F. I prune in mid March -- I think it's still too early for you.

Thanks! Do i wait until new green growth comes up or do i wait until march, right before the green growth comes up ? I am trying understand if there is a risk of me pruning too late and hurting the new buds ?

Noticed yesterday a friend's rose was making new growth here in this part of USDA 8. Which means it's pruning time to me.

I'm zone 9, but I don't start pruning till after Valentine's Day.

Zone 8A we prune mid Feb

My roses never really went dormant. Buds appeared 2 weeks ago, pruned my roses last week. I'm in zone 9a. No idea what February will bring temp wise but it seems the roses shrugs off low temps without any harm.

To be clear: is someone here stating that pruning causes a rose to break dormancy and produce new growth earlier than if pruning was not performed?

If so: could you kindly supply a reference?

I even have aphids, It is good to be me. Everything is budding but I am still going to wait until Presidents day to prune and that is just because I am putting it off as long as possible

bsmith0023 (z8b coastal SC), pruning late doesn't hurt. You might get blooms a little later.

BTW, I usually have a couple of inches of new growth by the time that I prune, but I would rather prune later than too early.

diane: does pruning "too early" "hurt"? Could you please elaborate?

rifis (zone 6b-7a NJ), it can in our zone. We can have hard freezes as late as mid-April (rare, but can happen). I wouldn't prune now, moisture can get into the open cuts and then freeze causing die back.
