The ones I had at my old house I mowed down every winter so that I could harvest in the spring. I did forget to one year and it was a cold year the frost killed the fern tops. The tops didn't releaf but I did get new fern that came up that spring. I would cut it back.

I don't think mine has ever grown new leafs ( or whatever they are) when they turn yellow and drop.

It should grow back from the roots. I defoliate them all the time when I try to pull them up lol, they regrow from their tuberous roots.

In the future once it recovers if I were you I'd remove the berries whenever they show up. I planted one as a child thinking it was a juniper (lol) and would be good for birds... I was very wrong and while the main plant I pulled up I still find babies years later that I missed. I'm surprised they haven't been banned yet because they have been officially declared an invasive species. BTW that main plant was outside for years and went through worse freezes than this year so yours should be OK

Thanks for the tip about the berries Jay. I know what you mean about going throygh worst freezes other years. This plant was given to me by my neighbor when she mived and has luved outdoors all its life and had never been burned like this. But it seems from what I read that in other years the really cold temps lasted for only an hour or two and the ground, being warm, protected the plants. This year on at least one night the below freezing temp lasted several hours on top of daytime temps being low and no sun to warm the soil.

My poor asparagus looks awful.

Food and water, food and water. It will come back just fine, might look a bit ugly until

then. My whole yard looks a bit ugly (9b) right now but I just have to be patient.

Ditto in the berries. I pick mine off and toss the berries in the trash inside! My aunt lives in Zone 8 (N. FL). Her asperagus fern freezes to the ground every winter but comes back every spring.
