Round or rectangle, the great table debate.

The current table in our breakfast room is a 48" round. It came from our old house (we moved about a year ago). We bought it on clist for cheap since we knew the kids would destroy it. It's now time to replace and I am torn if I should get another round table with a pedestal base or if the shape of the room is calling for something rectangular ( I have enjoyed having a round table, I like how the conversation flows). The room is about 12' x 9.5', if i were to get another round table i would want it to be larger, like 54", so we can seat more around it. A 60" table will not fit. Any and all suggestions for visions of this room are welcome. The antique schoolhouse chalkboard has to stay on the wall for sentimental reasons and for the fact I refuse to have papers plastered all over the refrigerator ( PS- The chalk board has become a fantastic design middle ground for me and my kids. They get to display their important pieces and I get to draw fun chalk frames around them. I highly recommend!)

What about an oval table, to seat a few more? Or a round table with leaves that extend it into an oval? That is what we have in both our kitchen and dining room.

I would do a round table with pedestal my thoughts put a low bench on the wall then 2 or 3 extra chairs around the table

The wall under the chalkboard seems to be begging for a bench with either a round or rectangular table and pedestals instead of legs on either. Also, try angling the chairs 45degrees so that one chair won't be sitting over the vent when pulled back (it's back is parallel to the angled window?)

You space is beautiful and I think it would look great with a banquette, either freestanding or built-in, with either rectangle or a larger round. Since it doesn't appear you have a hanging light you won't have to worry about it being off center with a new seating configuration. Your space is beautiful. An updated look would be your pedestal table...this allows more chairs wen needed without the legs getting in the way. I would go with a dark wood. I would switch out to a round rug in a fun pattern. Below is a rectangle, but the come in round options as well, from Overstock.com for around $200. A hanging chandelier would give great task lighting and add an interesting element to the room.

Bench is a great idea. And I would go for a round pedestal table if I were you, but one that extends into an oval if you need more space. I like your rug, but I would go rugless. I know, it's shocking ;-) But you have a gorgeous floor and the space is an interesting shape that the rug is distracting from.

Thanks for all the feedback! I have thought about a bench but have a hard time visualizing with a round table. I have been eyeing a copper top table from Bassett for a while now. I'm not sure I'm willing to cough up the $$$ for it. The 54" is $2k+ and the worst part is I can get the 60" at Direct Buy for $1.5k and the 48" for less than that, DB doesn't carry the 54" size, ughhhh!!!

Thanks! I was mistaken, the table at Direct Buy is Hooker, not Bassett, but very similar. I found a couple places online that will make a copper top for me custom for about $800. I would just have to find a similar base.

I'd definitely go with the 54" round table, and I'd get a narrower profile set of higher-backed chairs to place around it. The room is tall and can accommodate a higher backed chair.

I'm in love with these chairs, which is odd, since I don't normally go for the matchy matchy and these are from the same Hooker sanctuary line. I have sat in them and they are soooo comfy!

Comfort is number one in my book! Some of the best parties have been around the table, and comfortable chairs afford you long enjoyable hours of dining and conversational pleasure! I prefer the ones without arms all the way around.

I like those chairs too. Oh wow, that will make a gorgeous dining space. For some reason I think the armless ones have a funky vibe.

Bench was my first thought, but with a rectangular farm table, no rug and I like the armless chairs scarter 247 posted. This allows for more guest seating as the kids get older and bring friends home for casual meals. If it seems bare or colorless without the rug, try colorful patterned fabric roman shades in place of the fiber ones.

If you love your rug, a carpet store can trim the edges to mimic the corners and rebind the edges.

scarter247: go to the Hooker website. They have another round table, with a much nicer base, IMHO. I think it is from their Harbour Pointe Collection.

scarter247: the Hooker chairs that you really liked we're on Joss & Main last week. Keep an eye out for them. They may come up again soon. I don't think they were sold out. Recently, they have been repeating their offers when their entire inventory was previously unsold.

Going against the crowd, but I picture a big chunky rectangular farmhouse table with benches. Even though room has rounded shape, it has the space for a bigger table. It would look great with chalkboard accent. Round table too predictable. Love that space!

Sorry, mav40. I think the table should be round. The rest of the space can easily be well utilized with a sideboard or buffet and china cabinet, or a large, leafy, plant or two.

Yes, I did see them on Joss & Main ( which incidentally is where I purchased my Paula Deen table for my dining room for a fab deal!) they also have my chairs at direct buy for less than Joss, but I will keep my eye out!
