How about a large mirror with simple, wide frame ?

I don't see the issue. Cheery art, mirror with a little ledge under it for keys, etc. It's just a wall!

I like njmomma’s pictures. I’d do a built-in like that with a lid you could lift up for storage and add a cushion. I wouldn’t hang coats there because it looks nicer without the clutter. Maybe put your mirror there. I wouldn’t want to face a mirror as I entered the front door. I like the set up in njmomma’s picture. it’s simple. Nothing to overwhelm and crowd that small space.

As a matter-of-fact, while poking around on the internet, I did see some stuff on the bad feng shui of a mirror there. Thanks mjconti!

What about just wallpapering that one wall. A great wall paper can look great on that wall.

Have you thought of buying a front door that opens out? They have to be special ordered, so that the hinge pins are concealed.

The nook you posted is cute, but my question would be whether your family is one that would keep it like that? Many nooks end up being a jumble of too many coats and shoes. Maybe cubbies to keep things neat, or a trunk to keep things hidden?

And we're pretty good about keeping things neat. Besides it wouldn't really be our stuff in here, it'd be more for the guests. And I think the mirror is out the window.

I also had the thought to put beadboard type wood (like you see on front porches) on the ceiling of just the entryway painted about the same color as the walls?

If you're in an area where it snows, I would hestitate getting an outward opening door. It would make exiting a bit of a prob with snow blocking the door! The door will also get wet in rain when opened...dunno. This doesn' sound very practical.

Oh yeah, Michigan, You would have to have some some sort of vestibule or porch for an out opening door.

Regardless of which way the door opens, the size of the entry will be the same. Hello Michigan! This is Ohio! When will it be Spring?? There's been too many dreary days.

It's spring today in Alabama and winter tomorrow.

If you change the direction of the door swing on the closet door (so the knob is to your left) it would be easier to go in the door and then open the closet. That leaves a closet for hanging coats from the kids/grand kids. A bi-fold door that opens from the left would cause even less conflict. Or if you can recess a pocket door that slides to the left you would remove the conflict as well.

Building code prevents you from changing the door to an outward swing in a climate that gets snow. If you get two feet of snow overnight, you can't push the door open in an emergency. I would look for a great piece of art that reflects the kind of impression you want people to have of your home when they first walk in. If there's room, a very narrow shelf (3-4" deep) with a pretty vase of flowers and a bowl for keys as mentioned above would create a pretty vignette.

I have an entryway that is similar. I put a large mirror and I love it. I hated our entryway when we first moved in and have grown to like it as It runs half the length of the house and it makes our home feel more private. We can’t see any neighbors from the back of our house and thanks to the smart entryway design we can’t see any in the front either when in the main living areas. I did have a painting there before, the mirror helped me not feel as though I was walking straight into a wall. It helped the space look so much larger as the front door has glass and the mirror seemed to bounce that light around making everything seem larger.
