Peerless transaxle grease segestions

I'm gonna be replacing the input shaft bearing on the Peerless transaxle in my Allis-Chalmers 611 LTD and would like to replace the grease while I have it apart. It's a model 801-19A. It calls for Bentonite grease which is expensive so I'm trying to decide between Lucas Xtra Heavy Duty, Lucas Red & Tacky, or John Deere Corn Head grease. Any advice or segestions on which to use? It gets used mowing an acre of grass and leaf sweeper duty. Thanks.

I'm not a fan on bentonite and have used other grease in its place. The thing is as the old stuff is clay based, you really should take the time to clean the transmission really well. In just replacing the seal is it worth it? Your call. When you pull it apart, you will find a mess. If you do decide to use something else, I find that #2 grease flings itself off the gears etc and hangs out in the corners of the case. Maybe the corn head grease would be Ok? 00 if you think the axle seals will keep it in. If you are going that far, maybe get a set of shift keys too.

I'm not sure if this one has axle seals. The shifting is a bit sticky too, especially in 1st gear it likes to get stuck and needs a good smack to get it out. 2nd thru 5th are fine.

It may have the sealed roller bearings. The cross / input shafts have seals I think though. You are on the right page. It sounds like keys and a good lube change is in order.

Here's the schematic for it. All the brochure's I've found and read call it an HD model. Not sure what's beefed up in it compared to a standard model

    1. Yt , as Tom has advised bentonite is clay based grease used by Tecumseh and peerless due to its ability to resist moisture and high temps. It also clings to gear drives and resist being thrown off the gear surface . If your application does not have adequate sealing then most applicable moly,s will seep out . Lubriplate has a aircraft grease application which would be a adequate substitute , however it comes by the gallon . Again most other greases are soap based so buyer beware should you encounter moisture issues . If your unit has seals or o-rings the Lucas products may well suffice !

The axles and bearings primarily. When you have this apart, you'll know if it's worth the clean up. Post a pic when you do! Yuck witha capital uck!

I'll update you guys when I crack it open this spring. -22f the other morning here in western Wisconsin. High was -5f today. Too cold to work on it in an unheated dairy barn.

Isn't that what the kitchen table is for?

Growing up on a dairy farm, the cows did a very good job of keeping it heated? :-)

I got it cracked open this afternoon and got the input bearing changed. The grease was separated and full of water but all the gears and other bearings are in perfect shape. Got all the grease cleaned out and will pick up new stuff tomorrow.

Got 3 tubes of cornhead grease packed in and back together. Putting it back in the tractor tomorrow.

The grand experiment. I think this will end with you being glad you did it.

I used it to mow today since this is better than the Bolens which is down right now since the clutch rod snapped. The detent ball spring rusted in half so the shifting is loose and sloppy but otherwise so far so good. Forgot to gets pics since my hands were covered in bentonite. Yuck that is some nasty stuff.

Baha ! Hopefully last time you need that stuff again lol.
