Help with Wall Decor

last modified: 8 years ago

We just got rid of an entertainment center which took up our largest wall and we've just put the couch in its place. I'm looking for suggestions on what to do with the wall the couch is on. Also, feedback on what to do with the wall above the tv if anything (The tv is going to be mounted on the wall about 4 inches higher than where it currently sits). The glider is headed to Salvation army. Room is about 16x20. Main wall color is SW Balanced Beige.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

I would rearrange the furniture. As it is now, the space has a split personality and the seating can't decide if it wants to focus on the fireplace or on the TV. I'd move the sofa to face the wall it's on and put the TV where the sofa is now.

And I'd have to lose those curtains/swags. They don't belong in this room.

I see I just suggested you return to your old arrangement and didn't answer your question. If you're determined to keep this arrangement, then big art over the sofa: 2/3 -3/4 the width of the sofa hung 6 - 8" above.

I wouldn't put anything over the TV. The chest under the TV should actually be quite a bit longer than the TV to have correct proportions. That white cloth over the love seat looks rather odd and I wonder why it's there. I agree about the swags over the windows. That look has been out for a long time now. You have a nice large room, but there are things wrong with it that keep it from reaching its potential. I hope my advice isn't offensive to you. I would remove the mirror over the fireplace and put a smaller painting there, and then leave only the two end vases and remove everything else. You have room for two more chairs which can back onto the fireplace. The ceiling lights over the fireplace are really harsh and don't do anything for the room. A table lamp or floor lamp instead on the side of the couch near the fireplace would be much more flattering. The room as a whole looks rather empty, and you might want to google coffee table styling to see what you can add there. A stack of books is always good and maybe a tray to hold the TV remotes. A very large painting over the couch which has some bright colors, perhaps something abstract, would definitely help this room.

I agree with everything groveraxle said. Please do remove the swags on the windows. I would also consider eliminating the red accent wall and painting it the same color as the rest of the room. Will follow. Good luck with your project!

Thank you, I appreciate the comments. Everything in time. The fireplace was redone two weeks ago and because of that the man of the house insisted on a tv and surround sound. If inherently wealthy I could do it all in a day but now I've got something to work toward.

Agree with all above and I'd also consider scouring Craig's list for a more modern and streamlined coffee table

Jennias, I'm questioning why you moved the TV off the big wall. I understand getting rid of a big old entertainment center--they tend to be dated and oppressive--but it seems like the room would flow better with the TV on its original wall. Then the TV and fireplace would both be getting "equal time." The little wall the TV is on now would be perfect for art.

I would do something like this with a very long console on that big wall:

The thought behind 'flipping' the furniture was that it would open up the room. This obviously happened just by getting rid of the entertainment center. I think we figured the TV and console would be lost on the large wall. Unfortunately I cannot return the console so 66" it will have to remain. We've had it in the new configuration since Saturday and I don't like it. I found the room was cozier before. I may try to talk my husband into flipping it back with the new tv and console. Since that will leave even more space, what do you suggest for the wall? Using your picture above, would two long pieces still work or should it be something different? I feel like there is a lot of real estate to fill and the vaulted ceiling makes it more obvious.

I've done a few inexpensive things to help fill the wall, make the room more cohesive, and lighten it up a bit. I removed the curtains, left just the blinds, and painted the dark red wall to match the others.

Ignore the fact that I removed your sofas completely. I can't turn them with my software, so you'll have to put them back yourself. I would put one facing the TV, the other facing the fireplace. Which goes where depends on how they fit.

For the TV wall, I added an art grouping from Ikea. Frames and all, it's $40, and will balance the TV. I added a small chair which can share the end table with the sofa next to it. You don't need to fill the wall more than this.

Look for ways to get more light into the room with more lamps or opening the blinds. Consider replacing your coffee table; it's awfully heavy and weighs the room down. Use light natural colors in pillows and throws with lots of texture.

    Cozy room! You'll get there!

Are you sure you want to remove that comfortable glider rocker? They are so comfy!! Can you put it in a bedroom? Sorry to bring it up! But I've been 'talking' to so many others on Houzz with dilemmas that have said they are sorry they didn't keep their old, comfortable, solidly built chairs and wish they'd have had them recovered. Yours has cushions that could be easily recovered or replaced. You have a very nice room to to with.

If you do decide to go with a new media cabinet, here is a 95" one that is $319:

I do like the look of the chair and the off center TV. We are going to have to play around with the furniture. I'm afraid if I put the loveseat back on the small wall and sofa along the open area we won't be able to see the TV. Are you suggesting we pull the furniture more toward the center of the room?

I like the idea of Roman shades; they're on my list. I have started scouting tables and found some that I think will tie in with the metal on the fireplace, made by Riverside. Thoughts? Am I mixing too many woods?

You have been a huge help groveraxle, I appreciate the time you've put into my project.
