Many of mine do that, I believe it to be from slight cultural problems or issues. Sometimes just from moving them inside/outside for the season.

Thank you, Bob. So, what would be "cultural problems or issues" and how bad is that? Are these problems or issues I should address? If it's stressed in some way, I'd like to try to alleviate that.

It stays indoors, but I do move it from the window to kitchen sink each week to water. Someone told me orchids don't like to be "handled" or moved much, but I don't know if that's true. This is the only orchid I've ever had and the only things I know about them are what I've read here and on other sites.

This happens on mine as well, and I'm pretty sure it's normal. It happens when the growing tip dries up, and then something spurs it to start growing again. It seems to be partly related to humidity for me, but I never worry too much, especially if it's in the cooler, drier months.

PS: you can totally take your orchid to the sink to water it, that's not detrimental at all. I shuffle mine around quite a bit, and I've got a couple dozen.

As long as the root tips regrow, I wouldn't worry.

By slight issues I would say maybe it got too cold, too dry, too wet, "too" something for a short period.

Like d, I move and handle my orchids a lot without ill effect, maybe they meant repotting too often???

The media doesn't look "too" bad on top, but 2.5 years is getting to the max time you want to go without repotting what appears to be a bark/spagh mix. Get a bag of Orchid bark mix from a big box store and soak what you need of it for a day before repotting. You usually want to repot in spring when there are new roots forming, unless there are serious issues. Let us know if you need help with the repotting. I've always found phals in bark easy to repot back into new bark.
