Push to open trash

I have seen people reference an after market push to open trash system their contractor used. I am trying to find what it is called. Also, a guesstimate in cost to install? We looked at one that came from the factory with push open and the cost was really high ($500?). Just wondering if this is more economical including installation.

Perhaps this? It's what our cabinet maker is using I think... Servo-Drive Waste/Recycle Set

    Thanks!

Love my servo trash can opener! One of my favorite features in my new kitchen.

I read the thread posted above and have a couple of questions. 1) is this as simple as having a plug installled behind the trash cabinet and plugging it in or is there more instillation involved and 2) can most people still do 2 cans or does the 4” lost limit you to 1 can most of the time? 3) can you use it if you don’t have Blum glides?

We have the Ikea Utrusta push opener. It cost $139. All we needed was an electrical outlet inside the cabinet. We have two cans in an 18" wide base cabinet. We have Blum glides, so I don't know if other glides work as well, but probably.

I also bought the Ikea one that Cheryl mentions above (and yes - we just needed an outlet in the cabinet), but I got caught up in @strob06's question number 2 above. We have a Hafele double can pullout and inset cabinet doors and didn't have enough space to mount the opener. By the time I figured it all out I chose to abandon the opener and keep the pullout bins the way they were. Be sure to double check your set up and measurements. I tell myself that I don't miss it and that the dog probably would have figured out how to open it by now.

We have the Ikea Utrusta one with Blum soft close glides. It just plugs into an outlet at the back of the trash cabinet. Our cabinet maker knew we were getting one and had to shorten the depth of the trash bin 'shelf' to accommodate it, but not by much. Ours still holds two trash cans. I really like it, but I will say that when both regular and recycle cans are full or close to it, it doesn't open the door all the way. It opens it enough to throw something in the front bin, but if you need to get to the recycle, you have to open it further by hand.

I'm getting one of them in two different locations. I was pleasantly surprised that my cabinet people were only charging me 150. each. Mine each hold one trash can. So excited about this thing.

Electrician has to install GFI? Outlet.

I want to order the IKEA UTRUSTA push opener for an 18" pull-out, but the website says:

"All you need is MAXIMERA deep fully-extending drawer 17¾" and an outlet."

but the 17¾ depth drawers are only available for 24"/30"/36" width drawers.

The online Kitchen Planner also only offers it as an option for the wider cabinets.

Has anyone successfully installed this in an 18" or narrower cabinet?

Mine is installed in an 18" wide cabinet. Works well. One of our favorite things in our kitchen. :)

Awesome, thank you! Was the installation straightforward or did you have to do something special since the drawer is deeper?

I remember it being fairly simple, but just to be sure I used a life line to ask the BF.

His response, "Nothing special. Just had to align the opener. And install the bumpers. Pretty simple."

I checked out the other thread previously, and I'm still confused about the IKEA one. Can you use it on non-IKEA cabinets? Or do you need an IKEA kitchen to use it?

Also, when using either one of these options, what do people's trash cabinet look like?

Ours currently is just a cabinet door attached to some gliding rails on the bottom and it sucks. The top of the door hangs out and won't sit flush to the cabinet base and I feel like I'm going to just rip it off one day. I'd prefer it be built basically like a drawer, maybe shorter sides, that I can sit a trash can in. But everyone looked at me like I was crazy.

You do not need IKEA cabinets.

Trash cabinet is on the far right of the prep island. It has a drawer above it that is sealed from the trash cabinet below.

    The trash cabinet open.

Said this before, but it bares repeating: I love your kitchen Cheryl : ) Of the many, many things that I love about it, your liquor bar made me look for an area to put one in ours.. no go, but I'll live. (sigh).

2ManyDiversions , you're so sweet. I love that liquor bar, too. Sometimes I wonder how weird it is to have it in a kitchen, but then I remind myself of how handy it is right there. It's hella convenient when we entertain having the prep island with a sink right across from the alcohol. It's reaffirming to hear that you think it's cool, too. Thanks!

Cheryl, your most welcome, and it's not remotely weird. If anyone thinks such, they don't drink and don't tolerate others who do and you needn't pay any attention to that. I always thought your liquor bar was upscale, warm and inviting the way you have it lit and arranged, flowed beautifully with your entire kitchen, and smart, not to mention very cool! I've seen other homes with liquor bars in kitchens, but yours reminded me how convenient it'd be... if one had the darned room... one being DH and I : )

ETA: we do have a liquor cabinet in our kitchen, toward the eating nook (or had, it will return when we're done). Just wish it were built-in.

Thank you Cheryl! That is exactly what I am wanting. Good now I have a picture to show.

Im going to check out the IKEA thing now. We have one close.

Mine is also like Cheryl’s and is not an IKEA cabinet. The GC and electrician had no issue hooking it up. I’m just waiting for the dog to figure out how to open it. :-)

And it has a bottom just like other drawers?

I’ll take a pic of mine in a bit. Once I get my baby off me :)
