Paint color- bathroom

last modified: 7 years ago

I'm enclosing photos of the floor tile, shower floor tile ( basket weave) and vanity we're using for a bathroom we're remodeling.. There will be 2 sconces and a ceiling light flanking a mirror centered over the vanity. The photos don't show the detailed color shading and other aspects of the basket weave but should provide the main colors. The vanity top blends with the floor tile. ( may not seem so from the photos but it does)

Because there is one small window in the bathroom which always needs to be covered by blinds or another window treatment ( for privacy) , the natural light won't differ during the day or night.,

Any paint color we choose will be affected only by the lights, their shades, and the bulbs we use.

I'd greatly appreciate a starting point for paint colors, both walls and trim. We want something light . .

I find Sherwin Williams Dover White to be an extremely versatile color. It's a warmer white, which I like in a bath. I used it in a bath with similar vanity colors and the floor tile color.

I hope you find something you love :)

I appreciate your feedback. I've been looking at paint colors obsessively and there are so many shades of whites to choose from, let alone any other colors.

We do want something warm. The room is relatively small but with an oversized shower ( which was there when we bought the house or I'd have used the space differently) .

The area for the vanity, toilet, etc is along a long, narrow wall so a dark color would be claustrophobic. We can't expand the space so we have to work with what we have.

A nice gray/green would be nice! It would cool things down a bit but still feel a little warm.

Thanks. I'll need a trim color as well.

Are the floor tiles gray like shown in the photo? You mentioned they're the same color as the top of he vanity, which looks more gold.

I think this gray green color shown in the photo would be beautiful! I don't know the exact name of the color but I do know that it is a gray green. And I would not paint the trim a bright white, go for an off white or ivory.

    BM Travertine Tan

stay away from any blue/grays. you could also search "travertine bathrooms" here on Houzz and see if the wall color is mentioned in the comments of the pics you like.

i once had a bathroom painted green ... previous owner. every morning, the reflected color in the mirror made me feel Ill and out of sorts. made my skintone look green, too. I changed out the wall color to a white with a little blush. so much better.

Sherwin Williams Shoji White is a great soft white that seems to go with everything. I have it in my master bath and love it.

I had an outage so I'm just seeing all the wonderful replies. I'm so grateful for the input.

Below is a photo of the Mobe Pearl grout In my photo of the floor tile ( which was just installed). Whoa! Sorry for the large photo, can't seem to edit it.

    C. Renee asked about gold tones. There will be some from a brass framed vanity mirror and matching sconces (again, yet to be installed). The brass mirror arrived yesterday. The sconces the day before.

But I wouldn't call the colors in the vanity top " gold" .see the grout color for a better representation of the vanity top and tones in it relate to that.

In my original photo, the grout was not yet fully cured and it did lighten significantly and now blends with the vanity top and almost completely matches the floor, with the grout being just a tad different..in a good way. .

I can't seem to get a good photo of the installed tile and grout since the sconces aren't yet installed and the natural light is terrible, practically nonexistent.

The Mobe Pearl is What I'd call a very light beige or taupe but you can be the judge. Does it gave grey tones? I'm terrible at discerning those subtleties.

To answer a question, the tiles blends with some tones in the vanity top. I have issues with stone vanity tops and stone floors with different, but equally strong patterns so I went for a monochromatic floor, no pattern.

I have a rubbed bronze vanity mirror but it's a minor contender at this point. I don't like the dark, heavy look right over the vanity. I thought it'd be an ideal fit with the vanity hardware and wood but it just...isn't..

.So yes, we are mixing 2 metals, with the bronze being the main player.. The mix may seem odd ( or perhaps not) but - having held up the lights and mirror over the vanity - the brass adds a lightness over the dark vanity. .

i don't know if the brass sconces and mirror change the paint recommendations. I didn't mention the brass because I had to see the mirror and sconces in the room before making a decision.

    i do love the look.

I searched for "brass and bronze" in photos and did see some lovely examples- both on and off Houzz. I have no idea if I'm breaking rules about mixing metals.

If anyone else knows of any photos showing this mix, i could add them to my collection because my online photo album is currently rather small.

Our new mirror and a photo of a far different style of room than ours, but at least showing a somewhat similar mix of metals, and with a similarly dark vanity:

Aesthetic White by SW is very pretty. It may be a pinch light if you have a lot of light in the space. It doesn't lean blue, pink or green and has a true beige undertone and can lean ever so slightly gray in some lighting.

Aesthetic White... obviously not a bathroom, but a room with good light.

Wth everyone's leads, I've been looking at paint colors and chips to try and narrow down choices. For those in the same boat, you might find it helpful to follow up the excellent suggestions and resources here by searching online for video reviews of specific colors (as well as more examples of colors as they appear in various rooms).

Are there videos here at Houzz where various paint colors are reviewed?

While Houzz has been the greatest help for me, videos have been an additional option....and I can use all the help I can get. I simply don't have an instinctive feel for which paint colors work in specific rooms.

Paint is difficult and whites, off whites and gray is a tough one. Videos are very helpful I do agree. I have learned over a long time that one never knows what it will be like in their home day to night and lights on and lights off, etc. Sampling is the best way to try colors. I've been working on painting my kitchen and eat in kitchen. The eat in kitchen is full windows and I've tested some off whites not wanting it to be yellow in tone. I finally found one that works and doesn't change from wall to wall. It takes a bit of work, but it's worth it in the end. I settled on Warm Putty by Valspar of all things. It actually looks like putty. A nice off white with no yellow and leans a tad light greige at a certain time of the day. Works well with my linen slip covered chairs. I wish you luck and please tell us what you settle on!
