Sultry, I grew them few years back. I don't remember how the seeds look like but it is easy to find out if you go to the Caribbean or Latin market and compare the dried peas from there. I got mine from UCF, there are few varieties out there, one of them is a dwarf. Mine were productive little tree like with pretty flowers. They are sold dried, in a can or frozen if you want to try them with the rice dish.

I sprouted them straight in the soil with no amendments, very easy.

Thanks Silvia, I was hoping you would see this. I thought I saw some in a store a long tome ago, that were dried and tan and looked more like a chickpea. These are smaller, reddish brown, shiny, and flattened. Maybe I should order the other variety as well lol. Then I can grow them both and compare them.

I used to grow them some years ago but used them green. Can't grow the ordinary green peas here so they were a substitute, and quite good. From memory the dried ones looked the same as in your photo, no idea which variety they were. The only problem is they attracted a moth whose caterpillars liked the young pods

I really like the taste of the green ones. They're sort of lentil like but more plump once cooked. Never seen those red ones.

Yeah, the ones that grow in the islands are green when fresh and dry to a light tan, something like a smoother chickpea. Those look like one of the Indian varieties, but I have no idea of how they compare. Never tried those.

I just checked w/ an image search and apparently they do come in red as well as tan. 1 of the red varieties that looks very much like the pic above says 'Sudan' pigeon pea.
