I have a potted Star of the Republic that I plan on putting in the ground soon so I can't say how it will do yet but I'm hopeful it's going to be disease resistant and a good rose since that's what ARE has bread the Pioneer roses to be in Texas.

I would love to have Star of the Republic!!!

I love Anson Jones, Lady Pamela Carol, and Thomas Affleck. They have been very good roses for me. I planted Field Roebuck, Ron's Vision, Star of the Republic, and Mier y Teran last fall. I got some beautiful blooms from SotR before the first freeze. I think it is supposed to be rather stingy, but those few blooms I got were gorgeous. Happily awaiting the spring bloom. I would like to get some more in the future. I am also interested in Pioneer Spirit, as well as Brazos Belle, Ann''s Beautiful Daughter, etc.

Mine are coming this week. I hope they do well too. Some of the. Looms look gorgeous but there’s so little info on them.

Sofl , I also have star of the republic coming. I'm sure y'all have seen judys photos (prettypetals ) if you want to look em up. Can I ask to see a photo of the magazine spread ( if not that's totally ok! I don't get the magazine or I wouldn't ask. ) I still haven't decided where I want it , and if on a trellis or fence.

I ordered Belinda's Blush a while back. Not many photos to be found of that one, so I'm planning on getting some for hmf when it blooms this summer.

I almost ordered Belinda’s blush. I’m kind of regretting not ordering it now, but I have so many roses coming in the next few weeks. Lol

My ARE order is on the way. I got Brazos Belle and am really excited to see that one bloom. Does anyone grow Ron's Vision or Mier y Teran - would like information on those two. I have Belinda's Blush, but spring will be its first bloom season. I adore Star of the Republic but it is stingy for me too. Wondering if it likes full sun or partial shade? Have Doreen's Centennial and its bloom is beautiful.

Ah yes, I forgot that the lovely Doreen's Centennial is a Pioneer rose too. Mine was new last year but it took off like gangbusters. I usually don't get blooms from most roses in the first year, but I have at least some blooms from this rose every month of the blooming season last year.

Here's a nice picture from September when it was still hot - I don't find that the colors fade too much though mine is in part sun so that might help:

Here's a small shot of the bush, and you can see not only the stellar clean foliage in July (blackspot country for us) but also the nicely branched form it's starting to put on for a very young bush in zone 5. It's still no more than 3' high, but it has potential to be a nicely rounded bush from what I can tell as it ages.

Judith about Belinda's Blush - Is it not like Belinda's Dream where it takes off blooming almost right away? Or are you saying you planted it too late to see any? I have it ordered, and I was expecting a different colored BD. Is it different? Should I expect it to be slower? It's really hard to find info on it. :-)

Witchy, wish I could tell you more about it. I got it last fall, too late for it to bloom. I put it in a big pot - we are just now starting to see leaves on roses. I think it is a lighter color than Belinda's Dream. I have the climbing Belinda's Dream. Gregg Grant offered it early at the SFA University spring plant sales. It throws out large canes, blooms only once a year and mine have not bloomed that much. I have it just because it is an offspring of Belinda's Dream. Hoping for better from Belinda's Blush. I will post photos later in spring as my plant starts to bloom. I cant wait to see Brazos Belle!!!

Judith we can compare how it does in our different zones. That's the same reason I snapped it up. I almost got the climbing bd, but luckily I saw the info about it being stingy, so I passed. I hope we all can get some pics/info for hmf too. If it's as good as bd, I want to let everyone know! I haven't seen a pic of Brazos Belle, so I hope you post one. (or 100) lol

Tho its healthy, I may not keep my 2 BD climbers....or put them someplace in sun out of the way. They are pretty and arching but if they have no blooms, what good are they?? I will definitely get photos. I love apricot roses and that is what the one photo of Brazos Belle at ARE looks like. I have several more in pots waiting to be planted like Sweet Pegge, Rita Dennis, Mrs. Howard Moore; Sweet Verlin is coming in this week's order along with Blush Noisette and Archduke Charles. I really love these Pioneer roses!

I have Ron's Vision and Mier y Teran, Judith, but I just planted them this fall, so nothing to report yet. Looking forward to the spring flush!

Oh Alameda, now I'm considering switching out my BDs for something else. I didn't realize they were basically a once- bloomer. : ( I thought they'd be so pretty with the bush form at their feet.

Really wish the BD climber bloomed more than once! But, that's the breaks. Still, it is a healthy, arching plant and I hope one day [maybe this year??] I will see it covered with blooms. Am really looking forward to seeing how Belinda's Blush performs. I plan to visit ARE - its 3 hours from me - when bluebonnets and roses are in bloom. ARE's display gardens are spectacular! So many ideas, so many beds to oogle.....we take a picnic lunch, sit at one of the tables on the hill under the shade trees......its a wonderful treat. I plan to get Mier y Teran when I go. I couldn't wait for Brazos Belle, got that one along with 3 others when ARE had their no shipping sale recently.

Alameda, how old is your Cl. Belinda's Dream? I have it on order too, but I don't think I want to give prime full-sun real estate to a rose that won't grow into more repeats. I know some roses (a few of DA's come to mind) take a few years in addition to the sleep-creep-leap to get reblooming reliably, and I'm ok with that. But full sun is in short supply in my garden, and I don't think I want to sacrifice the space there to a once-bloomer.

I have 2 - both about 3-4 years old. Every year I think, OK, this is the year they are going to cover themselves in blooms. Not so far. I get scattered blooms, they look like Belinda's Dream, maybe not as big. Nothing to write home about. They could fool me this year and explode with blooms. I am skeptical. The bush is pretty - arching long arms, foliage is healthy, from what I recall. Hate to be negative esp. if you have ordered it and it may do better for you! I am not digging up a rose that could, if I leave it alone, be beautiful once a year. I will give it time but so far, I am not impressed. I just planted Alychemist and have way more hopes for it. But - I could be wrong - want to give this one plenty of time to come around and really - hate to toss a rose that one year could wake up and really bloom well.

Thank you Alameda! It would take at least 5 years for it to really 'settle', then. It sounds like Cl. B's Dream would take to a trellis very well.

I'd wonder if your summers get hot enough to shut it down, but you should still be getting a fall flush in that scenario. Climbing Belinda's Dream isn't listed on HMF so it's not like we can compare regional performance.

I got it with free shipping, so for $20 I may just take the plunge and be the northern-ish test case. Well, as much as a newbie can be a test case for roses! I was going to trellis it with a yellow climber on the south side of my house, so it wasn't going to be a focal point anyway.

Any updates on Pioneer roses? I am considering a,couple, . I have 3 , Sweet Pegge I an happy with, Rockwell S almost ddied this summer even with lots of water, so I pulled it up and potted it. Ann's Daughter also doenst do much here, so move to a pot.

Wanted to check with others growing Pioneer Rose's to ee what has worked for them...sorry for the spelling, houzz is acting weird and typing on my phone makes this harder!

I can't really comment - between the drought last year and something (squirrels?) chewing canes, I lost both 'Belinda's Dream Cl.' and 'Belinda's Blush'. Only those two, out of all my roses from ARE! Hopefully someone else can weigh in! I'm debating if I should get replacements or just plant something from my pot ghetto instead.

Here is my Sweet Pegge. I need to find a tall urn shaped planter for this one as all the canes seem to grow horizontally.

I'm interested in everyone's experience with the Pioneer roses, too. I have 7 so far: Mier y Teran, Sweet Pegge, Roemer's Hip Happy, Caroline Hunt, Star of the Republic, and Cole's Settlement. I had Anne's Beautiful Daughter, but I planted it in the ground with lots of tree root competition and too much shade. It was a trooper and hung in there for a few years before it finally died. I should have kept it potted since it stays rather small.

These are my experiences so far, but please keep in mind that all are growing in too much shade. I'm certain they would bloom more frequently with more direct sun. I don't spray, so their healthiness depends on their own merit.

Mier y Teran, has incredibly beautiful, fragrant blooms and the largest, healthiest, darkest green leaves of any other rose I grow. Shade has steadily encroached upon it so now it only puts out one or two blooms at a time, but it is extremely healthy and doesn't suffer from fungal diseases. The canes are completely thornless, but there are tiny prickles under the leaves. It is worthy of a better location, so I'm planning on moving it to a sunnier area soon.

Roemer's Hip Happy was received in May this year. I love singles with pretty stamens, and this one is really sweet. A good bloomer with attractive orange hips. Mild fragrance. Healthy foliage.

Star of the Republic is also new this year. It's been in a large container and sending out long canes at strange angles. The foliage is bright green and very healthy. The blooms are full with very pretty shades of apricot and cream. Great fragrance.

Sweet Pegge was purchased earlier this year and is in a container. It was growing up and through neighboring plants on fast growing long canes and blooming well, even in the shade. I moved it to a sunnier location and it's putting out more growth. I think it can be grown as a climber or pillared. Few thorns and very limber canes. Great scent and lovely cupped red blooms. Healthy foliage.

Caroline Hunt and Cole's Settlement were received a week ago, so no experience with them yet.

On my to-aquire list: Anson Jones, Gideon Lincecum (at the ARE display garden, I saw this rose. No blooms but gorgeous, huge frosted orange hips. Usually hips are shiny, I thought? These have a uniquely frosted appearance.). Rockwall Sesquicentennial, and Field Roebuck. I'm sure there will be others I need. I am easily enabled.

Weekend Gardener, My Rockwall Sesquicentennial did not do well in the heat, down to one cane. I just moved it to a container....it stayed very small.

Rekha, I was considering Rockwall S since it‘s a heavy bloomer for some people, but it’s a little worrisome to hear that yours isn’t flourishing. Was yours in strong sunlight? Most of my roses are grown in a fair bit of shade. I wonder if that would help or hinder?

Not sure, mine was in full sun and it could not take it...dont know how it would di in shade. I never have any luck getting roses to bloom in the shade. ..

Eta: I have it in a planter now. In part shade., will report back. I also moved Ann's beautiful daughter to a planter and it is a very small plant. Not sure how I feel about these two. ABD is fragrant and Rockwall is not fragrant at al, atleast to me, but the flower form is very pretty.

Updates on Pioneer roses? Also, those of you growing Doreen's Centennial, SotR and TA can you upload pictures, member ratings and comments to helpmefind rose website? I'd really like to learn how they do in hot and humid conditions.

Is TA thomas Affleck? Star of the republic does fairly well here, but did get knocked back by our very cold spells along with many otee hers. Yes to BS, but overcomes it an still blooms and looks good on an open metal fence. Brazos Bell has tiny sharp thorns and gorgeous fragrant blooms. Unfortunately, it seems to have come with midge and I should really treat it to see more than one bloom over 3 years. Low horizontal growth and not too vigorous, but that could be the midge.

Carolyn Hunt is a BS magnet with lovely natural blooms, but a horrid plant here. I really need a lace to plant these rejects and they still make pretty flowers for fillers. She may be too crowded, but her next door neighbor, Lindee doesnt seem to suffer.

Thomas Affleck does well here. No complaints. Belindas Blush was run over with a lawn mower last year and didnt survive so cant comment there. Belindas BluDreamm is great here so I would expect the same of her sport.

Vaporvac - My Brazos Belle stayed in a pot until a month or so ago. It just looked like it needed some extra care which seemed to pay off. I planted it in an optimum position where it gets full sun until about 2-3pm. So far.....it is putting out new growth and doing well. I havent seen alot of bloom since planted but assume this is because it is growing roots. But the blooms I have seen are really beautiful. Cant recall about scent. Not sure how large it will get yet. Apricot roses are my favorite so I have hopes that it will do well. I would say this one is well worth trying..........so far! Thomas Affleck is always a favorite. I loved Star of the Republic but lost it several years ago in Snowmageddon and havent replaced as it has been sold out. I just got Belinda's Blush from Northland Rosarium and it is potted up so too early to comment much on it but am sure it will be an excellent rose.

I have only one Pioneer rose by Mike Shoup. It is STAR OF THE REPUBLIC. The rose is on its second year, growing own root in a west facing bed in USDA Zone 7a (Mid-Atlantic region). So far I really like what I see. The fragrance is wonderful, flower form is on point, and the thornless canes are much appreciated. I was worried because of reading about poor repeat on this forum, but it bloomed all summer. I am looking forward to what it will do next year (you got to give own root roses a minimum of 3-years to mature). I also got Thomas Affleck and Cole's Settlement, but they just arrived so no point writing about them yet. Here are some pics of Star of the Republic that I took yesterday. Sorry about the holey foliage. Some pest is making a salad of it and I do not spray insecticides. BTW, my foolish husband cut it to the nubs last year thinking you have to treat all roses like Hybrid Teas. Grrrrrrr...
