replace wall decor

What should I replace the crosses with?
I bought these at a garage sale... I am far from religious... but it’s kind of hard place things on the wall that is diagonal... what would you place here?

Ingrid that is fine, I told you that the stuff on the mantle is Easter Decour I do have children.... and I decorate for every holiday...
In that vase that you dislike so much was over $100 from Pottery Barn

Ingrid what is wrong with the white candle holders I’ve been watching fixer-upper and she always puts candleholders everywhere in the living room.

I am not Ingid, but wanted to comment ....looks like your TV should be lower....almost sitting on the mantle. Yes, I decorate for the holidays when I had small children. They loved it. As for what to put on your wall....seems to me it should not be square since your TV is squarish. How about something like the spiral thing in your office? Can it be hung vertical instead of horizontal? If you think you want a mirror...how about two long narrow ones vertical...that may look good.

I like the mirror that you have. Just give it a new frame and get a couple more mirrors to make it look great.
OK so I think this might look good getting for things printed to fit the same size frame I’m gonna look on Etsy to find something that I like like black and whites of San Francisco since that is where I’m from...
It’s just hard because my husband is not from San Francisco... so I’m wondering if that’s a bad idea since it’s not something that includes the entire family
  • 7 years ago
@erinsean thank you for pointing that out I had no idea it was done too high now that I’m looking at Pinterest pictures I see that you are right :( it’s such a heavy thing I’m obviously unable to lower it myself.... my husband hates when I put holes in the wall and then I change it .... but I will let him know
  • 7 years ago

well you could do ones of where he is from two. many ways to arrange those including 2 in which you would be the center getting marrried or something

OK so I just try to decluttering my office I removed some of the things that were on top of the hutch, got rid of the mirror, like suggested, that was above the hutch...better?
The anaconda photo was on this wall but my sister said that she thinks this wall should be empty.... I have to get used to not decorating every single wall do you guys agree???... do you believe this wall should be bare?

i have to abstain from this, all my walls are filled with art, i paint and decorate to go with my art collections.

@havingfun so put the anocanda drawing from Iraq back? Or do you think it looks better above my desk...

hmmm, i do not think you understood. I would of course say put it there-unless someone eating has to look at fighting and war. i believe every wall should have as many original paintings or photos, etc. as you can hang. hence, why i am not a good voter.

Alright I took off the hanging piece with the swirls and tee light candles...I will place the black mirror their since it will face outside..I bought a lot of art work from Etsy...can’t wait for the finished look

    This for the dining area
These will be matted and framed, there is one more, so 2 on the top, two on the bottom for the living room
  • 7 years ago

san francisco set is lovely, the flowers are nice but too common for me.

It’s to add greenery that won’t die lol

ferns? here is what i know, although it may sound perfect, it may not be. the answer to a perfect plant is you buy one and it grows. I killed a million african violets til i got to the right apts with the right windows and even though it looked the same it was not. they grew like hot cakes.

Before hanging I had my husband hold up the mirror to where I thought I would be placing it however I’m feeling like maybe the frame is just too bold because my desk is already loud big and black.... it’s just so much black.... i’m trying to force this mirror to work in my house when again I just don’t have a foyer... does everyone else agree that this mirror with this frame is just too much to put here...
The Mira would be facing a sliding door that would allow reflection of light and greenery and all that goodness however maybe a thinner frame or even a metallic frame color would’ve been better....

After I took that picture I realized, I needed to clean up the space ...so here it is again...
So right now it’s just resting on my desk, because I’m not sure if I am going to hang it there, but do you think this is a good spot?

Personally I think a mirror near my desk would be a distraction from what I should focus on. But from a design perspective it seems fine to me.

An idea: could you use it to create a foyer vibe near your entry space, even if you don't have a clearly defined entry?

I wouldn’t hang a mirror over a desk. Who wants to watch themselves try to focus?! Your husband’s Iraq piece looked fine on the wall where it was. I would put it where he would see it the most, whether that’s over the desk or on the wall where it was.

I don’t think you’ve shown us the dining area where the botanical prints are going. I’m sure they’ll look fine. It’s always a nice look, if not original as another poster pointed out. But I wouldn’t not hang something I liked just because others had something similar.

Your San Francisco map and photos are super neat. I like to see things in others homes that are meaningful; that’s what makes a space feel personal. One bit of advice, I hope you get them framed professionally. I have a settlement map of the county in Virginia where my husband is from. I decided to just order a poster frame on amazon since it was a common size. I thought you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference since I wanted just a plain black frame anyway, but you can. It just looks cheap, which wasn’t what I was going for;) Maps can have such a stately feel, but not in a cheap frame!

You’re on the right track! Post photos when they’re hung:)

@nancy yes I will be taking them to Michael’s to be all done professionally and first taken to BLUE printers to make them all the same size and color, if possible.
@nancy, you are right...I don’t want to be distracted by the mirror when I am working lol
I will take that mirror off my desk today (with my husband’s help) and hang his Iraq photo there for a few days, take a photo and see what you all think.
@nancy this in the dining area.
It’s in a bay window sore area off from the kitchen and it has the wall to the left where I plan on putting the six herb framed photos

I like your yellow floor vase (I have a big Pottery Barn ceramic lamp that color) and totally understand decorating for the holidays. We don't have little kids around anymore, but I still do it because it is homey, and I have great memories of our home being decorated when I was a kid.

Anyway, I had commented on your other thread about adding some color above the desk, but now I see in this thread you don't necessarily enjoy color. I really love the idea of framed maps of where you guys are from, and I also like the framed ferns. The bottom line is that you should hang on the walls or put on the mantel what you will enjoy. But don't buy a bunch of stuff just to have something to hang on the wall. When I have done that, I have really regretted the time and money spent, not to mention the closet full of stuff I eventually take down and now have to store or get rid of.

One thing I do a few times a year is buy inexpensive orchids. The Home Depot near me has them occasionally for $6. So I buy 2 or 3 and sprinkle them around, usually with one on the mantel. When the flowers drop off in a few months, I throw them away or give them to a friend who has a way with orchids because I have never been able to get them to re-bloom. It's been inexpensive, lovely and natural décor for a few months, and you only have to water them (with 3 ice cubes on top of the roots) once a week.

This is my mantel, with the mirror that doesn't reflect a pretty scene, along with a little Easter décor on one end and summer décor on the other. I'm not going to win any awards, but I like it. This orchid has been going strong since mid-November.

If it were my home, I would hang the mirror there. It ties in with the rest of the office furniture. The furniture is what it is and hanging art or a gold mirror isn't going to change the 'feel' of the room. Mirrors aren't a distraction unless you're a narcissist. I have mirrors hung all over my home because I love them and rarely a day goes by that I'm looking into any mirror other than my bathroom mirror in the morning and at night. Maybe the office won't make Architectural Digest, but I think the mirror will look fine and, because it was a gift, will give you joy when you see it put to use. PS When you're sitting in the chair, you won't even be able to see yourself in the mirror.

@bluebell thank you for taking the time to read everything and look at everything I am going to go with the majority advice and not hang the mirror there my mother is a painter so maybe I will take a look at what she has. I’m a children’s entertainer and she did paint a picture of me at work in action so maybe that’ll work if it turns out good
  • 7 years ago

I really like the idea of using your mother's art! While I like a variety of things for hanging on the wall, I prefer something meaningful if possible. And if it's of you, it'll be even more special. I'm sure your kids will love it, too.

@bluebell... she just didn’t get the face right lol
  • 7 years ago
She was more accurate in this one

Carmen, please thank your husband for his service.

Are you keeping then Iraq picture over the desk? If so, I’d lower it a little.

One of the things to keep in mind when it comes to art/mirrors/things on the wall is that the eye kind of wants to travel around the room consistently... so when you hang something, you want to see where it is relative to what it’s over (for example, a couch or desk) but also where it is relative to the other items in the room, inc. art but also the height of doorways, windows, etc.

This man has an amazing blog with a lot of tips for this kind of thing... he explains the “rules.” Of course, you can break them, but it’s nice to know what they are anyway. They’ve helped me a lot.

OMG, I love those paintings! Yes, please use your mother’s art. How lovely to bring both you and her together this way, into your home.

@anele! I will definitely be using this!!!

Love them!! Your mother is talented!

Hey everyone back to the four photos of San Francisco that will all be enlarged and turned into the same size what is a roll of them does it have to stay within the perimeter of that black entertainment center?

I would center and balance them to the wall, no?

    *^four*^^^%

They look so nicely framed! I like them there. Are they centered on the wall? The one in the upper left looks visually weightier than the one in the lower right corner, so if it were me, I’d probably see how it would look to swap them. Good job!

    I love them! Good job.

Thank you @bluebell! I will swap the 2
    @bluebell better?

I like it better - but I'm no designer! ;) I think it looks great!

I like them as well and was going to suggest what bluebell did about switching the two pictures.

It is so much nicer than the crosses. They're interesting, they work, and they can be a conversation.

    nice!
