The bud was still there when I checked it yesterday. It's planted in sphagnum moss and I'm not used to that type of substrate so...If the learning curve is steep, I hope I'll fall within the graces of the plant with my care.

How is paper towel tube connected/used with scale? Scale seems to be my plants worst enemy!

Sheila, as for the scale insect, i use manual removal with a qtip and alcohol as well as plaving the plants outside for natural predators to take care of them. You have to inspect the plants at least every 3 days to do the physical removal and continue this for 2 weeks minimum, 3 weeks would be better.

Check out the conditions your plants are growing in. Most times, scale indicates a cultural problem that is weakening the plant making them susceptible to pests.

Yes, it is common for them to bloom at that size. The canes on mine are about 1/2 the size of yours and mine had bloomed numerous times.

Do you have pictures? Mine didn't appreciate being frozen and the buds blasted. I hope it's able to recover eventually.
