I don't have that particular cultivar, but most Acers have the capability to be weedy due to large numbers of samaras they produce.

I wouldn't necessarily consider most maple species as 'weedy'. Yes, they can produce a lot of samaras each season but how many actually germinate and grow into seedlings is quite low in comparison. As an example, I live where very large bigleaf maples abound, with each tree producing thousands, if not 100's of thousands, of samaras each season. Typically very few of these actually germinate and grow.......I'd guess overall not more than 1%.

I know of several mature specimens of 'Esk Sunset' ('Eskimo Sunset' is an incorrect cultivar name) in my area, including one on my niece's property, that have yet to produce any visible seedlings. Fertilization of the flowers can be complicated with the trees tending towards self incompatibility so the production of viable samaras may be limited.

In a cultivated garden that gets routine attention, I would not consider this to be an issue at all.

Acer pseudoplatanus f. purpureum has seeded out into some wooded sites in the Seattle area but I wouldn't expect a slow-growing, more significantly aberrant foliage color variant such as this one (named after the Esk Valley in New Zealand) to become a problem where planted anytime soon. Either in the garden or on adjacent land.

The main nuisance maple in North American parks and woodlands is Norway maple, now that one is quite a pest. Lots of Japanese maple seedlings may appear within watered gardens in my locale also.
