what is aerating my impatiens

The plants that I am wintering in the cellar are being invaded by a pest. It seems to be mostly the impatiens but some geraniums and other plants also. The pest is making the potting mix so fluffy that it doesn't hold moisture very well. I think they are eating the roots, too. I found a hole in the soil about 3/4 inch. There are mouse traps set down in the cellar and I do catch a mouse once in a while, but this seems to be something different.

Thanks for any advice

Sherry
