"Bonsai" Azalea

I popped this azalea into a bonsai pot 3 years ago and it's amazed me at the floral display each year since but while I believe it is a decidious style of azalea, it's dropped a LOT more leaf this year than previous despite a relatively mild winter (until now).

I'm wondering how best to keep it going into the future - do they tend to not do well in bonsai pots perhaps until a lot older than this one was (around 1-2 years if even as it came in a 3 inch pot) when potted in. It's just been so good I'd hate to lose it now through lack of adequate care. It's in a grit only mix and is fed fortnightly through the growing season with alternate seaweed liquid and "Green Dream" azalea bonsai feed - I was told previously I was heavily overfeeding but this is the regimen all my bonsai are on as suggested by my local expert who tends all my other trees. And he's commended me on their exceptional health. Unfortunately he doesn't work with azalea & we never have time anyway to review this one so I'm trying to get some more specialised info to help with it.
