Donna, Thank you for your interest in our Calumet Sleeps 4 Bunk Bed. You can set it up either to the right or to the left. Are you referring to the bar on the ladder? If you prefer, you can order a straight ladder without a guardrail. The bed does not come fully assembled as it would not fit through doorways. Basically, the assembly is quite straight forward.
