What would you do?

Well, here it is - my dated kitchen full of clutter! The last photo is my dream kitchen down to every last detail. The pendant orb lights are stunning but wouldn't work in our space. I fell in love with the back splash by Lunada Bay and it took some work but was able to get a sample. They only have one distributor in Canada. I love the coastal vibe of that dream kitchen and that's the feel/look I want.
I want to do Sea Salt on the walls, white quartz countertops and have crown molding to the top of the ceiling over the cupboards. The furniture and ugly rug, lights and mismatched appliances will be gone. The wood floors will be redone to a lighter colour next year.
Here's the sad part: we have a budget for refacing the cabinets vs. custom cabinetry.
I'm happy with the layout so that's okay...
The pantry/desk thing bugs me though with that expanse of white and we don't use the desk. As you can see, it has become a catch all for clutter.
This is the very beginning of our journey - getting ideas and your input would be greatly appreciated. See how dark it is too? And that's in the morning! Arghh...
Is getting that look and feel of that gorgeous kitchen (on a much smaller scale of course) possible? Thanks and apologies for the long-winded post!

You've got a good start with white cabinets! Do you really need to reface those?
I can see the lowers, to get that sea-ish blue you would, but really, your kitchen is 1/2 way there.

    More light, yes.
    Detail like crown molding.
Where's the fridge in the picture?
How big is your dining area?
Is it walled in or is it open to another room?

It looks like you have a lot of wasted space in that dining area. Could you take out your peninsula, extend your cabinets more towards the window and make an island parallel to the sink cabinets? How much room do you have? Do you need the desk cabinets on that wall, or could they be removed (and repurposed) to make room for seating on an island?

Oooo... Put your fridge where your pantry is and give yourself more counter space?

Sorry. I just suck at this, but I'm looking at it from the view point of if it were mine.

first thing i would do, and you don't have to wait to do it: Remove cabinets entirely from the desk wall. Second thing: call someone to discuss removal of your textured ceiling and discuss a lighting plan. Third thing: think about more wall areas to be VOIDED of cabinets completely...which involves inventory of your kitchen items and working with storage under counters primarily...and then if need be, add one or two wall cabinets.... then see what you NEED to place back on desk wall. You can order that as a contrasting area and spend a little there. In real life: you have a low pitch ceiling, one single window. Think: floating shelves, can lights, light beautiful counters, and something interesting on desk wall, but not overdone. Get a stainless chimney style hood. I would not drool over the inspiration pic except for the tones and lightness of feel. The moldings and height can't really be applied to your space, and strongly feel the open ,minimal wall treatments will be your best friend in your space.

Thank you mommyniki and CEFFreeman for your feedback! It takes time out of your day to comment and offer advice, so it is very much appreciated :-)
I love the suggestions from both of you and it's given me some fresh ideas. Especially the can lights and maybe moving the peninsula down a bit. I've always liked islands too. And you know what, I'm scared to find out the price of that tile too. It wasnt listed on their website but I wanted to have a sample just to see if it would work. It might very well be out of the question if it's too outrageous.
CEFFreeman, unfortunately we've got to replace the doors because they're cheap melamine and are all cracked and peeling. Ahh so much to think about but thanks again guys for your ideas!

Don't you love my hub's DIY solution for the cracked melamine doors? Tape.
    Bless him xo

Thank you herbflavor for the great suggestions. Yes, sometimes when we look at inspirational photos we get a little carried away before our heads come out of the clouds and back to reality. Yes, I hate the low ceiling but would still like a small, decorative crown molding of some type on the top of the cupboards. I hate that gap with a passion :) I never thought about the vent before but my husband wants a microwave there and not on the counter. The one above the stove doesn't work so it's container storage, haha. Thanks again for the great advice.

With the doors in that shape, that shows the boxes are not good quality either. They don’t put that quality of doors on great quality boxes. Refacing costs 75-150% of buying new cabinets. That means replacement of all cabinets.

This is a full blown remodel. Not a band aid or refresh. Especially since you are already planning floors. Keep planning and saving now, and do it all at once.

I'm with Sophie - I wouldn't put a lot of money into your current kitchen, with cabinets in that kind of shape. It looks like you have a nice space - you could make much better use of it!

Would you be willing to sketch out a floor plan of the kitchen and eating area with dimensions? And a sketch of where the kitchen fits into the rest of the house (where the doors go). I see lots of possibilities here, but not with your existing cabinets and layout.

    Cabinets starting to fall apart

    Useless desk

    New flooring

Yep, Looks like the kitchen has reached the time for retirement.

It's time to treat yourself to a whole kitchen remodel.

Thank you Sophie, Ann and ArtistSharon.
(I'm an artist too!) I'm going to present my case to my husband and convince, er ... 'gently persuade' him to reconsider our options. I just booked a kitchen design consultation so we shall see. I'm learning a lot here! Thanks again guys :-)
