The recommendation for indoor use probably comes from the fact it does tolerate dry air better than many other ferns. But zone 8 would be too cold for Kimberley Queen without protection.

I'm not sure how tall the Kimberly Queen fern is, but Southern Wood Fern (Dryopteris ludoviciana) is already pushing up fiddleheads in 7b, north central Texas. They die back with freezes but reliably regrow from roots every spring.

I live in the SC foothills and my autumn ferns stay green throughout the winter, through frost, freezes, snow, etc. Not all of them are in the ground, either. I have a medium sized urn filled with them and they behave the same.

I love Kimberly Queen ferns and can't wait til my local nursery or big box has them. They last usually through December in my 8a climate.

Have you ever looked at sword ferns? The Western Sword fern is rated zones 5-9. I'm planting several around my yard when they come available. They have an upright stance.

You say that your autumn ferns don’t turn red/yellow ?? That would be great, I can’t stand that color.

How can I protect Kimberly queen Fern? I'm in Dallas, zone 8 I believe.
