Pulling Mulch Back to Warm Things Up

I started getting worried as there was 2 flower beds with nary a sign of bulbs poking through. Granted, it does not get as much sunlight as where there seems to be bulbs poking through almost everywhere I have bulbs.

Sign of relief as they were just hiding under the mulch. I mulched a bit deeper in these areas, and boy, that mulch underneath was wet. Granted, I knew and expected as such....but I've never pulled back mulch after winter to let things dry out., but today I did. I filled up eight 2CU bags of this stuff...each bag about 3/4 full. Ill let the soil dry out, let the bulbs do their thing and just remulch it back when the annuals go in.

That's a lot of effort and really not necessary. The bulbs would have emerged in their own time.

Well, I'm hoping the extra effort pays off - and the pro bono bonus is the soil get's to dry out from wet winter if not the impeding spring rains. Things tend to be quite soggy until mid/late spring

I wouldn’t have bothered to pull back mulch

Another disadvantage, other than the unnecessary effort, is that the bulbs would have been growing hitherto protected by the mulch and then they would suddenly be exposed. They would probably be fine but it is not impossible that they would be adversely affected by unexpected cold weather which they were not prepared for. I really wouldn't do it again.
