Mail order plants

Time to fess up. I must have had a real case of Spring fever. I found a mail order plant and seed company, Burgess, online and ordered scads of stuff on two separate orders. Then I researched planting techniques on YouTube only for this company to be covered and nothing but complaints from viewers came up and it made me sick. Mind you, they were not to even ship before March. I immediately tried to cancel the orders but they quickly charged my credit card and actually promised to cancel. When I didn't see a credit on my card I wrote many emails and made many calls. Then out of the clear blue I got a message that the first order had shipped so I finally had to accept the inevitable. When the order arrived they sent just enough to keep me on the hook but it was only a partial order and nothing but twigs and horribly packaged. Some of the items I simply had to trash. I received bare root plants and as much as I could I planted. Some were bulbs so maybe they will be okay. I feel like a complete foolish idiot. This was a very expensive lesson and I am telling you all this story to spare you the same fate. Burgess/EBurgess is associated with many other mail order companies with many BBB complaints so do your research. Buyer beware.

Gardengal, thanks so much for your great information. I just found this site/forum several days ago and a novice at posting. It's wonderful of you to respond and I am very grateful.

Welcome to the forum Carol and don't worry everyone has done that. On a side not I have gotten good stuff from them and bad stuff kind of hit and miss

Glenn, thank you. Good to know I'm not the only one. They won't respond to my emails and I am appalled by their lack of customer service. At least I got a shipping notice on what I expected to be a complete order but was partial. That I could prepare for and be at home when it arrived. Now I am in limbo. Such is life I guess.

I now take the plants that arrive by mail and rather than plant them right away, I put them in pots, set them in the shade near my spigot( so a daily watering is doable) and nurse them for a few weeks or more before planting. and frankly, even from the most reputable companies, plants don't always handle shipping well. I love that you were so excited to buy plants! I have probably 3 dozen sitting in my "nursery" right now, waiting.......

Has happened to me a few times with different companies.

You need to be real careful about the zones and call the company to check and see if their plants will grow under Florida conditions.

I do the same as sonni, put the plants in small pots and grow them on my lanai to get a fell for how much sun and water their need. If you stick them in the sandy soil blasted with hot sun, they will die.

I no longer order from any nurseries unless they grow in Florida or the hot South.

Sonni and Jane, thanks so much for your excellent advice. I did research the zones very very carefully for each and every plant. I have lost one Yucca out of two so far but I can deal with that. I am babying everything else and I am starting to see life. The tiny Magnolias are showing little buds, the Hydrangeas are showing signs of life as well as the Variegated Weigelia which I know I will love. I also planted 4 Cannas and just saw the tip of one poking through the soil. I planted Ranunculus but I am totally unfamiliar with them so keeping my fingers crossed and also Butterfly plant. My sweet daughter living in Georgia sent me some Day Lilies and Hummingbird Vine so it will be the biggest thrill of all to watch them grow. Busy day. Later my new friends.

I meant to share with you that I bought the best 8" pruning saw from Amazon and it's a little gem and miracle worker. I spent all day yesterday pruning.

Carol, that name sounded familiar, so I went over to Garden Watchdog and it was as I thought. There is a whole group of company names they go by, but it's all the same place, and they all rip people off. Burgess seems to be the latest name they've come up with to con people into believing they are a new company. I don't know how they stay in business. Here's the Garden Watchdog Report. Make note of these company names and never order from any of them.

Thanks, DG. I will check it out with great interest.

dirtygardener, I referenced the Garden Watchdog (even linked to it) and the dismal reviews of Burgess Seeds in my very first post over a week ago.........did you miss that??

garden gal, I responded to you then. I have checked out the link and I can repeat verbatim what most of the commenters posted as being my own sorry, sad experience. Never again. Thanks again.

Carol, my comment was directed at dirtygardener, who wrote virtually the exact same thing I did but several days later :-)

Oh Yes, I almost ordered from them many years ago. Their catalogue is so very tempting. I remember having to fight the temptation to make a small order even after reading all the terrible reviews. I was going to order items that I felt were very hardy only and so unlikely to be dead lol but I guess I never did do that.

Florida Joes, the catalogs are Sooo tempting. I am not that experienced but I'm certainly enthusiastic while browsing their site from my comfortable chair. I should say WAS.

Gardengal, please forgive an overworked, extremely tired novice gardener here. I see now that your comment was directed elsewhere. Still pals?

Well I really hope that you get some strong survivor's. And that your survivor's are so "grateful" ( lol) to be out of their previous conditions that they thank you with abundant growth.

FJs, I am feeling blessed to see some things come to life. Thanks.

I would call your credit card company, file a dispute, take pics. of what you got, as proof of getting dead plants, or not near the quality they showed or promised, get a full refund. VERY easy to do.

PoohBear, I called them immediately and they said I had to wait 60 days which surprised me.

To get a refund from your credit card? That sounds typical!! They want our money on time. But be one day late, and your a criminal, and the 'dispute cases' take 1-2 'cycles' to get posted. BUT do it! GET YOUR MONEY BACK!!! Dont let them get the best of you! If you dont pursue it, they will 'let it slide. Call and be a pest!!!!!

Oh, believe me I am a pest. I call often and email every other day.

    Carol,

I received the Burgess catalog last week and trashed it per your comments. One time and only one time I ordered Blueberry plants online from Fla based firm. Big disappointment. I agree with you, never again. Seeds from online reputable companies, plants bought locally.

    Thanks for the warning.

Contact your credit card company and file a complaint and ask for a full refund. A good credit card company will stand behind you and take care of you in these circumstances. If they don't help you, you know you need a different credit card company.

tc, I did receive a few items from them and some are actually growing. Maybe if you placed a small order it would be fine. I on the other hand ordered almost everything indicated for my zone except vegetables, fruits and berries. It's really taking a leap of faith with the "twigs" you receive to even bother.

To my great surprise I actually got a $90 credit back to my card today. There is still a sizable order that they won't address but they have until the end of March to ship the order and if not I will deluge them with calls and messages again.

I don't know what has happened but I am getting no alerts of posts from the Florida Gardening Forum group. Are you on Facebook under a group that I can access there? I wanted to share with all of you that after 2 agonizing months of calling and emailing Burgess Plant and Seed Co. my credit card company is getting me a full refund of the very first order of over $143 I placed with them. What a relief. I bought the garden soil and mulch, planned the garden spots and just been in limbo waiting for plants to arrive any day from them. Glad that nightmare is over and now I can move forward. Thanks everyone for your suggestions and support.

Not getting your emails means your notification settings are off . I've had that happen to me. I had a hard time finding it and turning it on. I don't remember how to find that maybe someone on here who is better with computers can tell you how.

@Carol - I can't message you because you don't have messaging turned on. Mouse over your profile at the top right of the page where it says "Your Houzz" and click "edit profile." On the left side of the page, click "Advanced Settings." You can set up all your preferences there and post your trading list if you want to. You can also allow people to message you.

dg, does this only apply to the Houzz site? I don't have Facebook Messenger and don't want it because all the alerts cover part of my text when reading ebooks. Any Facebook friend can still message me though.

I did as you suggested, dg and hope for the best. Thanks..
